Enteric Illness Outbreaks Reported Through the National Outbreak Reporting System-United States, 2009-2019

Mary E. Wikswo et al.

Summary: Norovirus caused the most outbreaks, illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths. Persons in Escherichia coli and Salmonella outbreaks were more likely to be hospitalized or die. Outbreak surveillance provides the relative contributions of each transmission mode and etiology and guides targeted interventions.

Temporal changes in the proportion of Salmonella outbreaks associated with 12 food commodity groups in the United States

Michael S. Williams et al.

Summary: This study utilizes data from 20 years of Salmonella foodborne outbreaks to analyze trends in the proportion of outbreaks associated with different commodity groups. The study shows that outbreak counts have a stronger trend signal than illness counts. The number of outbreaks with an identified food vehicle increased between 1998 and 2000, followed by a decrease for the next 10 years. Between 2010 and 2014, the number of outbreaks increased significantly, and remained unchanged for the rest of the study period. Three commodity groups, including eggs, pork, and seeded vegetables, saw significant changes in outbreak proportions, while the remaining nine groups did not show significant changes.
