Evading the strength-ductility trade-off at room temperature and achieving ultrahigh plasticity at 800°C in a TiAl alloy

Guoming Zheng et al.

Summary: This study developed two new microstructures, T-T and T-D structures, in the Ti-43.5Al-4Nb-1Mo-0.18 (TNM) alloy, which significantly improved the alloy's strength and ductility. The formation of deformation twins and the promotion of dynamic recrystallization were found to play important roles in enhancing the plasticity at both room temperature and elevated temperatures.

Temperature dependent anisotropic mechanical behavior of TiAl based alloys

Balaji Selvarajou et al.

Summary: Titanium aluminide alloys exhibit excellent mechanical properties at high temperatures, but their microstructure shows highly anisotropic behavior, and the associated micromechanics are not well understood. In this study, crystal plasticity finite element techniques are used to establish structure-property relationships and reveal the complex interplay between lamellar orientation, structural length scale, temperature, and stress state. The results provide insights for improving damage tolerance in these alloys.

Microstructure and nanomechanical behavior of individual phase in β-solidifying Ti-43Al-5Nb-3.5Cr-1Zr alloy

Haoran Song et al.

Summary: The influence of lamellar orientation on the nanohardness of alpha(2)/gamma lamellae in a beta-solidifying TiAl alloy was investigated. The results showed that the nanohardness of alpha(2)/gamma lamellae exhibited plastic anisotropy, which was determined by the oriented angle and the deformation characteristics of the alpha(2) and gamma phase. Furthermore, the nanohardness of the individual lamellar colony decreased with an increase in the oriented angle.

Thermomechanical instability and deformation behavior of βo(ω) phase region in a Ti-43Al-8Nb-0.2W-0.2B alloy under high-temperature rotary-bending fatigue

Jieren Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the phase transformation and deformation behavior of the beta(o)(omega) phase region under high-temperature rotary-bending fatigue condition. It is found that under this condition, the omega(o) phase transforms into the beta(o) phase, and the newly formed beta(o) phase is coherent with the pre-existing beta(o) phase. Additionally, tensile stress promotes the phase transition of beta(o) to omega(o). The presence of disordered omega phase in the residual omega(o) phase suggests it may be a transition state in the phase transformation from omega(o) to beta(o).

Twinning and twin intersections in grains of Ti-42.9Al-4.6Nb-2Cr

Summary: This study utilized transmission electron microscopy to investigate the hot deformation behavior of a beta-solidifying gamma-TiAl alloy with a duplex structure. It found that twinning is closely linked to twin intersections in gamma grains. As isothermal compression proceeded, faults evolved into twins, with dislocations aiding in promoting twinning in gamma grains.

Fatigue behavior of additive manufactured 316L stainless steel under axial versus rotating-bending loading: Synergistic effects of stress gradient, surface roughness, and volumetric defects

Rakish Shrestha et al.

Summary: The study found that the fatigue behavior of LB-PBF 316L SS largely depends on the stress amplitude, with rotating-bending specimens showing better fatigue resistance at higher stress amplitudes compared to axial specimens. At lower stress amplitudes, surface roughness and volumetric defects become significant factors limiting the life of LB-PBF 316L SS.

Temperature dependent fatigue crack growth in forged TiAl alloys with nearly-lamellar and triplex microstructure

Motoki Sakaguchi et al.

Summary: The study found that at high temperatures, the fatigue crack growth resistance of the triplex microstructure is significantly increased, mainly due to the higher volume fraction of ductile p phase. Meanwhile, the fatigue crack growth threshold in different microstructures and temperatures is almost comparable and shows the same temperature dependency.

Summary: In this study, near-net-shape gamma-TiAl blades were built using selective electron beam melting. The material exhibited excellent properties at 700 degrees C due to optimized process parameters. A new cracking mechanism was identified through thermal shock experiments at 900 degrees C, likely associated with layer-by-layer strategy and oxidation combined with surface topology.

Summary: In this study, the factors affecting the columnar to equiaxed transition (CET) in high-Nb TiAl alloys were investigated by fabricating Ti46Al7Nb0.4W0.6Cr0.1B alloy using cold crucible directional solidification (CCDS) technique. Results showed that the increase in pulling rate and fulfillment of heterogeneous nucleation conditions were the main factors influencing CET.

Role of growth rate on microstructure evolution, element distribution and nanohardness of phases in directionally solidified multiphase high-Nb TiAl alloy

Xuesong Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of growth rate on the microstructure evolution, element distribution, and mechanical properties of a multiphase TiAl alloy. With increasing growth rates, the volume fractions of B2 and blocky gamma phases increased, and the content of Cr and Zr in the B2 phase showed a positive correlation with growth rate. Nanoindentation tests revealed that the nanohardness of different phases changed along with growth rates due to the enrichment or barrenness of alloying elements.
