The synergetic effects of shot peening and laser-shot peening on the microstructural evolution and fatigue performance of a medium carbon steel

Yating Zhang et al.

Summary: The synergetic effect of shot peening and laser shot peening on the fatigue behavior of a medium carbon steel was studied. The fatigue performance of the SP + LSP specimen was found to be improved only at lower stress levels, which is consistent with the observed short crack propagation behavior near the threshold region. The heterogeneous structures of ultra-fine grains, dislocation tangles, and high-angle grain boundaries were responsible for effectively retarding the short crack propagation.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of an Fe-Mn-Al-C lightweight steel after dynamic plastic deformation processing and subsequent aging

Zongyuan Li et al.

Summary: An austenitic low-density steel was processed by dynamic plastic deformation (DPD) followed by aging. The results show that DPD processing produces fine grain structures with high density dislocations. The yield strength of the steel is significantly increased due to a combination of dislocation strengthening and grain boundary strengthening, and further strengthened by the precipitation of kappa-carbides.

Microstructures and fatigue behaviors of 25CrNi2MoV steel under electropulsing-assisted ultrasonic surface rolling

Chenfeng Duan et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of electropulsing-assisted ultrasonic surface rolling (EUSR) on 25CrNi2MoV steel. The EUSR process results in the formation of nano-gradient structures, reduction in surface roughness and improvement in surface hardness, residual compressive stress, and fatigue resistance. Furthermore, EUSR treatment significantly increases the depth of hardened and residual stress layers, prolongs the fatigue life of the specimens, and identifies the misorientation of adjacent grains as an important indicator affecting fatigue crack growth.

Evaluation of pre-shot peening on improvement of carburizing heat treatment of AISI 9310 gear steel

Jizhan Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, a strategy of combining pre-shot peening process and subsequent carburizing heat treatment was proposed to improve the efficiency of carburizing heat treatment of AISI 9310 gear steel. The relationship between effective hardening depth (EHD) and microstructure, plastic deformation, and surface roughness was explored. The results showed that the proposed strategy greatly enhanced the efficiency of carburization heat treatment with an increase in EHD and surface hardness (SH). The importance of shot peening intensity and coverage to EHD was also analyzed using the random forest (RF) algorithm.

Study on the relation between surface integrity and contact fatigue of carburized gears

Xiuhua Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relation between surface integrity and contact fatigue of gears. The results show that gears with high surface integrity exhibit the highest contact fatigue limit, which is 15.1% higher than gears with carburizing and grinding. Surface hardness, maximum compressive residual stress, and surface roughness are the most significant factors affecting contact fatigue life and fatigue limit. The proposed formulae have reasonable prediction accuracy for fatigue life and fatigue limit.

Determination of the mode I crack tip opening rate and the rate dependent cohesive properties for structural adhesive joints using digital image correlation

Fengzhen Sun et al.

Summary: This study focuses on two key issues related to rate effects in adhesively bonded joints: the accurate determination of crack tip strain rate and cohesive zone length. Experimental results show that the cohesive properties of the two adhesives exhibit different rate dependences, while the DIC method developed successfully determines strain rates for the investigated TSLs.
