UV/Chlorination of sulfamethazine (SMZ) and other prescription drugs: kinetics, transformation products and insights into the combined toxicological assessment

Xiaoshu Yan et al.

Summary: The UV/chlorination of three prescription drugs was studied and it was found that their degradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. The structures and transformation pathways of the products were proposed. The degradation kinetics of the drugs in natural waters were observed to be slower compared to artificial water samples, suggesting the presence of aromatic containing transformation products.

The synergistic effect of peracetic acid activated by graphene oxide quantum dots in the inactivation of E. coli and organic dye removal with LED reactor light

Charmaine Sesethu Tshangana et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a low-impact process using the synergy of peracetic acid and graphene oxide quantum GQDs to degrade poorly biodegradable organic compounds. The results show that increasing GQDs loading significantly improves photodegradation efficiency, while increasing PAA concentration has a lesser effect due to limited active sites. The proposed antimicrobial mechanism involves PAA diffusion causing damage to cell membrane, inducing cellular matter leakage, and ultimately leading to bacterial cell death.

Photocatalytic activity of graphene oxide quantum dots in an effluent from a South African wastewater treatment plant

C. S. Tshangana et al.

Summary: This study utilized graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) as photocatalysts to achieve efficient discoloration of organic azo dyes in both synthetic and real wastewater samples. The results showed high degradation rates of the dyes, reaching 60% and 98% in 180 minutes for synthetic water and spiked real wastewater, respectively. The use of GOQDs as a photocatalyst proved effective in wastewater treatment, providing detoxification and discoloration of harmful dyes.

Summary: The research found that periphyton enriched water with oxygen and labile dissolved organic carbon forms, but these labile organic carbon sources did not stimulate leaf-litter decomposition, rather they decoupled microbial decomposer activity from particulate organic matter to dissolved organic matter through negative priming.

Peracetic Acid-Ruthenium(III) Oxidation Process for the Degradation of Micropollutants in Water

Ruobai Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated an advanced oxidation process using peracetic acid (PAA) and ruthenium(III) (Ru(III)) to oxidize micropollutants in water. The results showed that at neutral pH, the PAA-Ru(III) system efficiently removed a wide range of pharmaceuticals, with Ru(III) playing a crucial role in activating PAA for micropollutant oxidation.
