Performance of ammonia fuel in a spark assisted compression Ignition engine

Christine Mounaim-Rousselle et al.

Summary: Recent studies have demonstrated the feasibility of using ammonia in SI engines with an ignition booster. This study focuses on the performance and exhaust pollutants of premixed ammonia/air combustion in a Spark-Assisted Compression Ignition engine. The results show that neat ammonia can be used over a large operating range, driven by intake pressure and a classical ignition device with a high compression ratio.

Numerical Study of Engine Performance and Emissions for Port Injection of Ammonia into a Gasoline\Ethanol Dual-Fuel Spark Ignition Engine

Farhad Salek et al.

Summary: The study found that ammonia port injection significantly reduces NOx emissions, but has negative impacts on engine efficiency, CO, and HC emissions. It also decreases the minimum octane number required to prevent knock when added to the fuel mixture.

Experimental and kinetic study on the laminar burning velocities of NH3 mixing with CH3OH and C2H5OH in premixed flames

Zhihua Wang et al.

Summary: The laminar burning velocities of ammonia blended with methanol/air and ethanol/air flames were studied, a new kinetic mechanism was proposed and validated, and it was found that interactions between C- and N-containing species are insignificant for the laminar burning velocities of various ammonia blending mixtures.

Operating Limits for Ammonia Fuel Spark-Ignition Engine

Christine Mounaim-Rousselle et al.

Summary: This paper explores the potential use of ammonia as a carbon-free fuel in a spark-ignition engine, finding that adding less than 10% H-2 to NH3 can allow the engine to operate stably in most conditions. Introducing a 10% dilution limit of H-2 into the intake gases can reduce NOx emissions by up to 40% while maintaining stable operation.

Advancements of combustion technologies in the ammonia-fuelled engines

Meng-Choung Chiong et al.

Summary: Ammonia has become an attractive alternative fuel for power generation, showing potential in internal combustion engines and gas turbines. Different optimization strategies may be needed for different types of engines, such as increasing hydrogen mass fraction or utilizing multiple fuel injections. Partial premixed combustion has gained considerable interest in gas turbine research for its ability to operate at low equivalence ratios.
