Effect of diesel and propanol blends on regulated pollutants and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons under lean combustion conditions

Nadir Yilmaz et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of blending n-propanol with diesel fuel on exhaust emissions from a diesel engine. The results show that adding n-propanol can reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emissions, especially high toxic PAHs. N-propanol also decreases the distribution of heavier PAHs. Therefore, n-propanol is an effective additive that can improve the environmental performance of diesel engines.

Effect of diesel and pentanol blends on PAH formation and regulated pollutants

Nadir Yilmaz et al.

Summary: The necessity of using oxygenated fuel blends in diesel engines has become apparent in recent years. This study aims to reduce emissions and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in diesel engines by adding n-pentanol. The results show that adding n-pentanol can significantly reduce nitrogen oxides emissions, lower PAH emissions, and decrease the production of higher cyclic PAHs.

Summary: In this study, the optimal concentrations of a ternary mixture of diesel, waste oil derived biodiesel, and 1-pentanol were determined and their effects on engine performance and exhaust emissions were predicted. The optimization results showed that a fuel mixture with 79.09% diesel, 8.33% waste oil derived biodiesel, and 12.58% 1-pentanol can achieve the desired result, and the prediction accuracy was confirmed through a confirmation test.

Impact of biodiesel and propanol blends on engine performance, regulated emissions and PAH formation

Nadir Yilmaz et al.

Summary: Oxygenated fuels, such as blends of biodiesel and high-alcohol content, have gained increasing interest as sustainable alternative fuels for diesel engines. This study evaluated the emissions of a diesel engine running on a biodiesel-propanol blend fuel, and found that the blend significantly reduced the levels of PAHs, a health hazard and detrimental to engine components. However, adding too much propanol to biodiesel appeared to result in an increase in PAHs and toxicity.

Formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and regulated emissions from biodiesel and n-butanol blends containing water

Nadir Yilmaz et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the effect of water-containing n-butanol-biodiesel blends on diesel engine emissions. The results showed that the use of diesel and blended fuels increased fuel consumption, exhaust gas temperature, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbon emissions. However, the use of n-butanol and n-butanol-water blends significantly reduced nitrogen oxide emissions. Compared to diesel, biodiesel and blended fuels significantly reduced total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their toxicity, but the n-butanol-water biodiesel blend increased the emissions and toxicity of PAHs.

Nadir Yilmaz et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of diesel, waste oil biodiesel, and n-butanol blends on engine function and emissions, finding that appropriate blend ratios can reduce NOx and PAH emissions but increase unburned hydrocarbons and CO emissions. Fuel properties not only affect PAH formation, but also influence the generation of other emissions.

Fuel effects on PAH formation, toxicity and regulated pollutants: Detailed comparison of biodiesel blends with propanol, butanol and pentanol

Nadir Yilmaz et al.

Summary: Blends of biodiesel and high-carbon alcohols have been found to reduce harmful emissions and toxicity levels in diesel engines, compared to straight diesel fuel. Adding small amounts of alcohol to biodiesel can decrease the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and increase fuel efficiency. However, higher levels of alcohol in the blend may increase PAH emissions. This study highlights the benefits of using biodiesel-alcohol blends for reducing the likelihood of wetstacking in diesel engines.

Summary: The latest research on fuels has focused on exploring better alternatives for compression ignition engines, with biodiesel from waste cooking oil being identified as a viable source. The two-step transesterification method is preferred for commercial-scale biodiesel production due to the high free fatty acids and water content in waste cooking oil. Factors such as catalyst concentration, alcohol to oil molar ratio, reaction temperature, and time of reaction all affect the yield of biodiesel.
