A novel method to predict and prevent commutation failures in LCC-HVDC systems

Bohao Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influences of the fault occurring moment on the commutation process in line-commutated converter-based HVDC transmission systems. It presents methods to calculate critical fault voltage and extinction angle based on the voltage-time area theory, and proposes the concept of commutation failure domain and security domain to estimate the probability of commutation failures. Furthermore, it introduces methods to calculate direct current and RMS voltage under asymmetrical faults and proposes a novel commutation failure prediction and prevention strategy.

Coordinated power control of electrochemical energy storage for mitigating subsequent commutation failures of HVDC

Hongyu Zhou et al.

Summary: Commutation failure in HVDC systems can cause voltage and current swings, leading to power interruption and threatening grid safety. EES with fast power response can help mitigate subsequent commutation failures. Active and reactive power output from EES affect commutation conditions, and a coordinated power control strategy is proposed for SCFs mitigation.

Chunyi Guo et al.

Summary: This study introduces the hybrid LCC/VSC cascaded HVDC (HC-HVDC) scheme and a control method for addressing the DC overcurrent issue of VSC-MMCs under commutation failure condition in the inverter side. Based on the ongoing Baihetan-Jiangsu project, a HC-HVDC system model is developed and the performance of the proposed control method is evaluated through simulations.

Resilient DC Voltage Control for Islanded Wind Farms Integration Using Cascaded Hybrid HVDC System

Peiyu Meng et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an integration system for large-scale islanded onshore wind power based on the cascaded hybrid HVDC transmission system. The hierarchical integration arrangement improves operating flexibility and reduces the capacity and number of step-up interfacing transformers. A resilient DC voltage control is proposed to adaptively redistribute power during wind power fluctuations. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the system.

A Dynamic Series Voltage Compensator for the Mitigation of LCC-HVDC Commutation Failure

Lingxi Hou et al.

Summary: The dynamic series voltage compensator (DSVC) is proposed to effectively mitigate the commutation failure (CF) of the line-commutated converter high-voltage direct current (LCC-HVDC) transmission system. It consists of three IGCT-based FBSM chains to match the bulk power transmission of the LCC-HVDC, and its operation and control strategies enable quick response and safe operation. The DSVC shows better performance than existing topologies in handling emergencies and stresses beyond its capability, ensuring its feasibility and practicability.

Improved predictive calculation-based extinction angle control for HVDC

Juanjuan Wang et al.

Summary: An improved control method for extinction angle control in HVDC projects is proposed in this study, which calculates the firing angle order of each converter valve based on commutation voltage and adds a compensation term to eliminate deviation, effectively reducing the risk of commutation failure and ensuring stable system recovery. Multiple simulations validate the performance of the proposed strategy on benchmark and project models.
