Fast Mutual-Speed-Up Protection Adaptive to Dead-Zone Grounding-Fault Identification for VSC-MTDC

Xiangning Lin et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a mutual-speed-up protection strategy for identifying dead-zone grounding faults in VSC-MTDC systems, which aims to address the issue of protection elements being insufficiently sensitive to trigger faults. By analyzing the time domain and frequency domain characteristics of fault-induced primary traveling waves and those caused by DC circuit breaker operations, time difference and zero-crossing criteria are proposed to differentiate between remote-end dead-zone faults and external faults at the head of adjacent DC lines. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of this strategy even without communication, making it a powerful supplemental strategy for existing main protection elements.
