A template for an improved rock-based subdivision of the pre-Cryogenian timescale

Graham A. Shields et al.

Summary: This article reviews the processes that led to the current geological timescale and proposes revisions for subdividing time before 720 million years ago. The assessment of Precambrian rock records suggests that using rock-based concepts for subdivision may require only modest deviation from current chronometric boundaries.

Exposing the inside of the fine-grained siliciclastic tidal shelf deposits of the Alicia Formation, Tandilia Basin, during the Ediacaran anoxia in the Clymene Ocean

M. Julia Arrouy et al.

Summary: This study outlines the outstanding attributes and inferred depositional controls for dark mudstones of the Alicia Formation, revealing the intrinsic characteristics of unknown Ediacaran marine depositional conditions. The research combines stratigraphic characterization with detailed facies descriptions, petrography, XRD, SEM, and geochemistry analyses to provide evidence of middle Ediacaran anoxia in the Tandilia Basin. The data suggest a link between the depositional setting during most severe redox changes within the SW Gondwana scenario.

Crustal architecture and tectonic evolution of the southernmost Rio de la Plata Craton and its Neoproterozoic-Paleozoic sedimentary cover: Insights from 3D litho-constrained stochastic inversion models

Rodolfo O. Christiansen et al.

Summary: This study presents a 3D litho-constrained gravity inversion model of the southern sector of the Rio de la Plata Craton, providing new insights into the distribution of the Neoproterozoic-Paleozoic sedimentary cover and supporting its relationship with different orogenic events. The results shed light on the orogenic mechanisms and deformation transfer in the region, challenging previous models of orogenic architecture.

Unravelling hidden glacial effects in the Cryogenian marine depositional settings of the Tandilia Basin, Argentina

Lucia E. Gomez-Peral et al.

Summary: The Cryogenian Period is characterized by two global glaciations, Sturtian and Marinoan, which led to significant climate and sea level changes. The study of the Villa Monica Formation in Central Argentina provides insights into sedimentary facies variations and stromatolite development in a post-glaciation, phosphorus-rich ocean. Further research is needed to understand the paleoenvironmental models and regional correlation of this unit.
