Historical trends of degradation, loss, and recovery in the tropical forest reserves of Ghana

Michael C. Wimberly et al.

Summary: This study used Landsat satellite data and remote sensing algorithms to monitor forest degradation, loss, and recovery in forest reserves of Ghana. The results showed an increasing trend of forest degradation and loss, with slower recovery. Widespread fires in 2016 caused significant forest loss and degradation in moist semi-deciduous and upland evergreen forest types.

Summary: This study used rainfall, relative humidity, maximum temperature, and minimum temperature data to classify Ghana into climate zones using cluster and PCA analysis. The results identified three main zones: savannah, forest, and coastal. The findings are crucial for industries and decision-makers that depend on weather conditions.

Spatial and temporal changes analysis of air quality before and after the COVID-19 in Shandong Province, China

Huaqiao Xing et al.

Summary: Due to the implementation of home quarantine policy during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, the air quality in China, particularly in Shandong Province, has shown improvements. The concentrations of CO and NO2 have decreased, while SO2 remains relatively stable. Aerosol optical depth (AOD) has also increased in January 2020, attributed to urban heating and reduction of pollutants. These findings provide valuable data for atmospheric protection and air quality monitoring, as well as guidance for policy formulation and urban planning.

The Effect of Rainfall, Temperature, and Relative Humidity on the Yield of Cassava, Yam, and Maize in the Ashanti Region of Ghana

Harriet Achiaa Dwamena et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of changes in temperature, humidity, and rainfall on the yields of maize, cassava, and yam in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The results showed that each climatic condition had a significant effect on crop yields, and that different crops were affected differently by these climatic conditions. The study also found that a large proportion of the variations in crop yields could be explained by these climatic factors.

Global and Regional Trends and Drivers of Fire Under Climate Change

Matthew W. Jones et al.

Summary: This article reviews the impacts of climate change on fire weather and the consequences for regional fire activity. It finds that fire weather controls the annual timing of fires in most world regions, and the frequency and extremity of fire weather have been globally pervasive due to climate change. Increases in burned area have also been seen in some forest regions, but other factors can override the relationship between burned area and fire weather.

Performance of CMIP6 HighResMIP on the Representation of Onset and Cessation of Seasonal Rainfall in Southern West Africa

Francis Nkrumah et al.

Summary: This study employs an objective method to analyze the onset and cessation dates of rainfall in Southern West Africa using multiple models and observations. The results show a good agreement between the models and observations in capturing the seasonal rainfall behavior, with models able to capture the short break between rainfall seasons. The seasonal timing of the models agrees well with the observations, but there is little variation in the performance of the models in representing onset and cessation dates during the bimodal rainfall season.

Climate Change Affecting Forest Fire and Flood Risk-Facts, Predictions, and Perceptions in Central and South Greece

Dimitra Angra et al.

Summary: This article analyzes the impact of climate change on flood and forest fire disasters in Greece and studies the perceptions and accountability of the lay public and management authorities. The results show a significant increase in flood and forest fire risks in central Greece, while the risks remain relatively stable in the southern region. However, the public and management authorities have weak understanding and sense of responsibility towards climate change.

How climate change and fire exclusion drive wildfire regimes at actionable scales

Erin J. Hanan et al.

Summary: Extreme wildfires are increasing globally, prompting new efforts to mitigate risk. The ecological appropriateness of risk mitigation strategies depends on the factors driving these increases. Recent advances in fire regime modeling can help understand which drivers dominate at management-relevant scales.

Opposite response of strong and moderate positive Indian Ocean Dipole to global warming

Wenju Cai et al.

Summary: The study reveals that under greenhouse warming, there is increased sea surface temperature variability during strong pIOD events with cool anomalies in the eastern Indian Ocean, while there is decreased variability during moderate pIOD events dominated by warm anomalies in the western region. Models predict that climate extremes, such as the 2019 events, are likely to occur more frequently under greenhouse warming.

Connections of climate change and variability to large and extreme forest fires in southeast Australia

Nerilie J. Abram et al.

Summary: The unprecedented 2019/20 Black Summer bushfire disaster in southeast Australia was mainly caused by extreme dry climate and long-term climate trends leading to increased fire risk. Improving local and national adaptation measures while pursuing ambitious global climate change mitigation efforts are necessary to limit further increases in fire risk in southeast Australia. Multiple climate change contributors have led to an increase in fire extent and intensity over the past decades, and this trend is likely to continue into the future.
