Transformation archetypes in global food systems

Andre Zuanazzi Dornelles et al.

Summary: Based on analysis of food systems data from 161 countries over 25 years, three distinct transformation archetypes were identified globally: rapidly expansionist, expansionist, and consolidative. Different agricultural structure changes and social-environmental outcomes were found across these archetypes, indicating unsustainable trajectories independent of productivity improvements.

The global environmental agenda urgently needs a semantic web of knowledge

Stefano Balbi et al.

Summary: Progress in key social-ecological challenges of the global environmental agenda is hindered by a lack of integration and synthesis of existing scientific evidence. Artificial intelligence-based approaches, underpinned by semantics and machine reasoning, offer constructive solutions by enabling quick search, organization, reuse, combination, and synthesis of scientific information.

Quality Assurance for Spatial Research Data

Michael Wagner et al.

Summary: In this paper, the concepts and workflow for assuring the quality of spatial data in Earth System Sciences (ESS) are presented. They focus on openness, FAIRness of data, data maturity, and data quality. A revised maturity matrix and a spatial data quality matrix are proposed, and the maturity and quality levels are assigned to the phases of the data life cycle. Furthermore, a quality assurance (QA) workflow is built, including various activities and roles, and an interactive questionnaire in the tool RDMO is implemented to support researchers in applying this workflow.

Positional errors in species distribution modelling are not overcome by the coarser grains of analysis

Lukas Gabor et al.

Summary: The performance of species distribution models (SDMs) is affected by analysis grain and positional error of species occurrences. Coarsening the analysis grain to compensate for positional error does not improve model performance.

An International Library for Land Cover Legends: The Land Cover Legend Registry

Fatima Mushtaq et al.

Summary: Information on land cover is crucial for achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. However, due to different classification schemes and limited access to information, international standards for land cover are necessary. This article introduces the first international platform for land cover legend and emphasizes the importance of improving data coordination and interoperability through this platform.

Open Community-Based Crowdsourcing Geoportal for Earth Observation Products: A Model Design and Prototype Implementation

Mohammad H. Vahidnia et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new model called OCCGEOP for crowdsourcing Earth observation products through geoportals, featuring automated publishing and quality assessment. A prototype implementation in Iran showed that OCCGEOP is in line with the priorities of new generation geoportals, offering unique features and promising performance.

Geospatial User Feedback: How to Raise Users' Voices and Collectively Build Knowledge at the Same Time

Alaitz Zabala et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an extension of the current Open Geospatial Consortium standard for Geospatial User Feedback to include the required knowledge elements, and a practical implementation. The system can incrementally collect, store, and communicate knowledge elements created by users of the data and keep them linked to the original data by means of permanent data identifiers.

A Synthesis of Land Use/Land Cover Studies: Definitions, Classification Systems, Meta-Studies, Challenges and Knowledge Gaps on a Global Landscape

Ryan Nedd et al.

Summary: Land use/land cover change (LULCC) has a significant impact on land-atmosphere/climate interactions, with main reasons being rapid population growth, migration, and rural-to-urban conversion. Past studies have focused on LULC definitions, classification systems, direct and indirect changes, challenges, and knowledge gaps. Challenges in LULC include data consistency and quality, while knowledge gaps exist in ecosystem services, forestry, and data/image modeling in LULC.

Three Decades of Land Cover Change in East Africa

Eric L. Bullock et al.

Summary: This study analyzed land cover changes in Sub-Saharan East Africa using satellite observations, finding a significant increase in cropland area and a decrease in woody vegetation. The rapid population growth led to concerns about the conservation of natural ecosystems due to land conversion caused by human activities.

A survey of biodiversity informatics: Concepts, practices, and challenges

Luiz M. R. Gadelha et al.

Summary: The unprecedented size of the human population and its economic activities have an increasing impact on global environments, raising concerns about resource consumption and ecosystem capacity. To effectively conserve biodiversity, indicators and knowledge must be openly available to decision-makers in usable ways, requiring tools and techniques to generate trustworthy data from various sources.
