Factors determining the subseasonal prediction skill of summer extreme rainfall over southern China

Junting Wu et al.

Summary: The skill of predicting the first component of the boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation (BSISO1) may determine the forecast skill of extreme summer rainfall over southern China (SCER). The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model can predict the BSISO1 index up to 24 days in advance, while the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) model has a skill of about 10 days. The moisture convergence anomaly induced by BSISO1 serves as the primary source of subseasonal predictability for SCER.

Seasonal Prediction of Extreme High-Temperature Days in Southwestern China Based on the Physical Precursors

Zhiyi Zhou et al.

Summary: Extreme high temperatures often occur in southwestern China, affecting the local ecology and economy. The accurate prediction of these extreme high-temperature days (EHDs) remains a challenge. This study identifies the spatiotemporal characteristics of EHDs and defines a domain-averaged EHD index for southwestern China. The study also finds meaningful precursors for EHDs and develops an empirical model for skillful prediction, achieving a correlation coefficient of 0.76.

The compound impacts of sea surface temperature modes in the Indian and North Atlantic oceans on the extreme precipitation days in the Yangtze River Basin

Zhiwei Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the independent and compound impacts of leading sea surface temperature (SST) modes in the Indian Ocean and the North Atlantic Ocean on extreme precipitation days (EPDs) over the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) in East Asia. The Indian Ocean Basin Mode (IOBM) and the North Atlantic SST tripole southern mode (NATS) both contribute to increased EPDs in the YRB, while the North Atlantic SST tripole northern mode (NATN) also has an impact on the circulation anomaly over Northeast Asia. These findings provide useful predictability sources for seasonal prediction of extreme precipitation in the YRB.

Changes in the factors controlling Northeast Asian spring surface air temperature in the past 60 years

Shanshan Fu et al.

Summary: Exploring the predictability sources of Northeast Asian spring surface air temperature (NEAST) is of great socioeconomic importance. This study identified three factors that alternately control NEAST during different epochs in the past 60 years and explained the underlying physical mechanisms. Further analyses revealed the impacts of declining Arctic sea-ice cover, weakening central Asian westerly jet, and North Atlantic rainfall anomalies on the controlling factors. A physical-based empirical model constructed using these factors showed superior performance in reproducing and predicting NEAST compared to coupled dynamical models.

Ye Long et al.

Summary: It has been found that the anomaly pattern of extreme high temperature days in Southern China during summer is predictable. A physics-based empirical model is established to predict these patterns, and the prediction accuracy is 0.37.

Understanding global monsoon precipitation changes during the 8.2 ka event and the current warm period

Peng He et al.

Summary: The study reveals that during the 8.2 ka cold event, simulated monsoon rainfall decreased in the Northern Hemisphere while it increased in the Southern Hemisphere. The changes were mainly influenced by suppressed upward motion and increased moisture. In contrast, during the present warm period, the moisture and circulation effects from greenhouse warming negate each other, resulting in a moderate sensitivity of precipitation to temperature change.

Monsoons Climate Change Assessment

Bin Wang et al.

Summary: This review article discusses the past changes and future projections of monsoon rainfall, as well as the challenges in modeling and outlooks. The impact of global warming and urbanization on extreme rainfall events in monsoon regions is significant. While there are regional variations in mean monsoon rainfall changes, there is a high confidence that the frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall events will increase in the future.

Evaluation of precipitation in CMIP6 over the Yangtze River Basin

Ying Li et al.

Summary: The study found that CMIP6 models generally captured the increasing pattern of precipitation from the source region to the lower reaches of the Yangtze River basin, but with a significant wet bias. Most models exhibited an increasing trend in precipitation in the northwest part of the basin during 1961-2014, but displayed large spatial discrepancies in other regions. Future projections show that precipitation over the Yangtze River basin will continue to increase under both scenarios, but the rate of increase will vary between near term and long term periods.

Anthropogenic influence on extreme Meiyu rainfall in 2020 and its future risk

Tianjun Zhou et al.

Summary: In the summer of 2020, Eastern China experienced excessive Meiyu rainfall, leading to frequent extreme rainfall events. Anthropogenic influences, such as greenhouse gas emissions and aerosols, have been found to significantly impact the probability of extreme rainfall events, with greenhouse gases increasing the likelihood and aerosols decreasing it. Further research suggests that with continued emission of GHGs and reduction of aerosols, similar heavy rainfall events are projected to occur more frequently, emphasizing the importance of implementing effective mitigation measures.
