Hypoxia Improves Endurance Performance by Enhancing Short Chain Fatty Acids Production via Gut Microbiota Remodeling

Li Huang et al.

Summary: This study found that hypoxia exposure could enhance endurance capacity. Hypoxia led to gut microbiota remodeling, increasing the abundance of beneficial genera and the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Moreover, hypoxia significantly improved endurance by promoting mitochondrial biogenesis and improving biochemical parameters related to exercise fatigue. Antibiotics experiments and microbiota transplantation experiments demonstrated that the beneficial effects of hypoxia on exercise performance were partly dependent on the gut microbiota. Acetate and butyrate were identified as stimulators of mitochondrial biogenesis and endurance performance.

Structure and antioxidant activity of six mushroom-derived heterogalactans

Yunhe Qu et al.

Summary: Heterogalactans with weight-average molecular weights similar to 20 kDa were isolated from several species of mushroom and their structures were analyzed. These heterogalactans have a common backbone composed of (1 -> 6)-linked-alpha-D-galactopyranosyl residues that are substituted at O-2. The mannogalactans or fucogalactans have been identified as (1 -> 6)-alpha-D-galactans, branched primarily with beta-D-mannopyranosyl or alpha-L-fucopyranosyl residues. The 3-O-methylated-alpha-D-galactopyranosyl residues within the mannogalactan chains exhibit strong antioxidant activity.

Summary: The study revealed that Ganoderma lucidum polysaccharides can extend swimming time, enhance endurance, and promote fatigue recovery, especially polysaccharides with molecular weights above 10 kDa. These GLPs may reduce the activities of SUN and CK, decrease the levels of MDA and BLA, increase the level of Gly, accelerate fat transformation, and improve the activities of GPx, SOD, and LDH in all treated mice. Therefore, GLPs above 10 kDa could be potential agents with antifatigue activity.
