Preparation of lignin-based carbon nanotubes using micelles as soft template

Cao Tu et al.

Summary: In this study, a feasible method for the preparation of lignin-based carbon nanotubes (L-CNTs) using lignin as the carbon source based on mobile chemical vapor deposition is proposed. Lignin-based micelles were used as a soft template to prepare a catalyst, and then L-CNTs were synthesized from gaseous products generated by lignin pyrolysis. By adjusting the reaction conditions, L-CNTs with diameters ranging from 10 to 110 nm and lengths ranging from 1 to 6 & mu;m were obtained. The synthesized L-CNTs were mainly multi-walled carbon nanotubes, of which the crystal layer spacing was 0.35 nm, with a good graphitization degree and thermal stability, providing a new method for the high-value utilization of lignin.

Enzymatic hydrolysis of corn stover lignin by laccase, lignin peroxidase, and manganese peroxidase

Sitong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study isolated high purity and structurally intact lignin from enzymatic residue of corn stover and investigated its degradation by laccase, lignin peroxidase, and manganese peroxidase. The results showed that the highest degradation percentage of lignin was achieved with a mixture of these enzymes. The degradation destroyed the macromolecular structure of lignin and produced more acidic compounds.

Summary: Lignin, as an aromatic polymer, has gained attention due to its high carbon content, low cost, and bio-renewability. However, most lignin is burned for power generation, with only a small amount used as a raw material. Increasing the added value of lignin to broaden its applications is a current challenge.

Summary: Utilizing lignin as carbonaceous material for pollution adsorption provides an alternative method for lignocellulose valorization. Among the lignin-based adsorbents, LC-B showed the best adsorption capacity for toxic gaseous pollutant removal and demonstrated excellent recycling stability. The excellent performance of lignin-based adsorbents is attributed to its abundant pore structure, high specific surface area, enhanced graphitization degree, and abundant hydroxyl functional groups.

Directional depolymerization of lignin into high added-value chemical with synergistic effect of binary solvents

Zhongzhi Yang et al.

Summary: A one-pot method was used to depolymerize organosolv lignin into high added-value phenolic monomers in a synergistic reaction system with methanol-dimethoxymethane binary solvents and acid catalyst. The optimal conditions for maximum yield of liquid products and phenolic monomers were determined through careful investigation of solvent composition and reaction parameters. The proposed mechanism for lignin depolymerization provides promising prospects for developing effective methods to obtain high added-value phenolic compounds from lignin.

Summary: This study demonstrates the modulation of N species by tailoring the functionalization and atomic structure of graphene derivatives prior to chemical N-doping. Thermal annealing at moderate temperatures was shown to readjust the composition of N-species in graphene derivatives regardless of their chemistry, nanostructure, and the initial distribution of the N-species. The oxidation of the graphene layer governs the manifestation of pi* resonances and configuration of sigma* resonance.
