The hydrogels exhibited adjustable physical properties and suitable pore sizes for cell adhesion. Chitosan endowed the hydrogels with hemostatic, antibacterial properties, and great cytocompatibility, addressing two main challenges in the wound healing process. Histological analysis and confocal images confirmed that the hydrogel dressings significantly accelerated the regeneration of damaged skin with proper epithelial thickness, new blood vessels, and hair follicles.

Synthesis and wound healing performance of new water-soluble chitosan derivatives

Summary: An efficient method for the preparation of water-soluble chitosan (CS) was reported, showing good water solubility and cytocompatibility of the resulting derivatives. CS derivatives with different ratios of polyethyleneimine (PEI) were synthesized under optimized conditions, and used for biomedical and drug delivery applications such as membrane preparation and wound healing studies. The thyroxine loaded membranes showed good level of neovascularization in angiogenic potential testing.

In vivo printing of growth factor-eluting adhesive scaffolds improves wound healing

Biofabrication of ZnO/Malachite nanocomposite and its coating with chitosan to heal infectious wounds

Summary: This study synthesized zinc oxide/malachite nanocomposite and its coating form with chitosan and investigated their physicochemical characterization as well as biomedical effects, including antibacterial activity, antioxidant properties, cytotoxicity, modulation in gene expressions, and histopathological parameters. The results showed that the nanocomposites had strong antibacterial activity and antioxidant properties, and the ointments produced from the nanocomposites exhibited wound healing activity. The expressions of IL-1 beta, IL-6, and TNF-alpha decreased while the expressions of IL-10, TGF-beta, and bFGF increased with the administration of the nanocomposite ointments.

Electrospun nanofiber-based drug delivery platform: advances in diabetic foot ulcer management

Summary: A simple method for designing printable cellulose-based inks by adding sodium alginate (SA) to the formulation was proposed in this study, and hierarchically porous cellulose/alginate monolithic hydrogel (CAH) for highly effective adsorption of methylene blue (MB) was manufactured. Characterization results confirmed the successful preparation of CAH and identified hydrogen bond interaction and electrostatic interaction as the dominant mechanisms for MB removal onto CAH. The results suggest that the 3D-printed CAH could be a high-potential material for environmental applications.
