Roles of Bothrops jararacussu toxins I and II: Antiviral findings against Zika virus

Natasha Marques Cassani et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that two phospholipases A2 (PLA2) isolated from snake venom can inhibit the activity of Zika virus, with a strong effect on the entry of the virus into host cells. These findings suggest that these PLA2s could serve as potential templates for the development of antiviral drugs against Zika virus in the future.

Transmissibility of hand, foot, and mouth disease in 97 counties of China

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the transmissibility of HFMD in different counties of Jiangsu Province, China and explored the factors influencing its transmissibility. The results showed variations in transmissibility among different counties, which may be related to factors such as climate, demographic characteristics, virus subtypes, vaccination, hygiene, and other infectious diseases.

Development of an Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay for Detection of the Native Conformation of Enterovirus A71

Natalie J. Kingston et al.

Summary: EVA71 is a medically important virus commonly associated with hand, foot, and mouth disease. Vaccination is crucial for controlling outbreaks, but the antigenic characterization of vaccine candidates is challenging due to limited tools to characterize different forms of the virus. This study developed a tool to specifically detect the native conformation of EVA71, aiding in characterizing the antigenic state of the virus.

Snake venom phospholipase A2s exhibit strong virucidal activity against SARS-CoV-2 and inhibit the viral spike glycoprotein interaction with ACE2

Andrei E. Siniavin et al.

Summary: PLA(2)s from snake venoms have shown promising antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2, protecting Vero E6 cells and inhibiting viral replication and cell fusion. They could be developed as antiviral drugs targeting the viral envelope and serve as useful tools for studying virus-host cell interaction.

Chikungunya virus entry is strongly inhibited by phospholipase A2 isolated from the venom of Crotalus durissus terrificus

Igor Andrade Santos et al.

Summary: Research has shown that the snake venom protein PLA2(CB) has strong anti-CHIKV activity, interfering with various stages of the CHIKV replicative cycle. Additionally, PLA2(CB) interacts with CHIKV glycoproteins, blocking virus entry into host cells.

Control measures during the COVID-19 outbreak reduced the transmission of hand, foot, and mouth disease

Yan Niu et al.

Summary: The control measures implemented during the COVID-19 outbreak in China have had a significant impact on the spread of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). While the incidence and effective reproductive number (Reff) of HFMD decreased initially, there was a rebound in the second half of 2020. The study also showed that the total attack rate (TAR) in 2020 was lower than in previous years, indicating that the preventive measures for COVID-19 have played a key role in containing the transmission of HFMD.
