Development of strong, tough and flame-retardant phenolic resins by using Acacia mangium tannin-functionalized graphene nanoplatelets

Jiongjiong Li et al.

Summary: Decorating Acacia mangium tannin onto graphene through ball milling forms AMT-functionalized graphene nanoplatelets (AMT@GnPs), which are used to greenly modify and reinforce phenolic resins. The prepared phenolic resin (BGTPF) exhibits high wet bonding strength, tensile strength, and toughness, showing significant improvements compared with the neat AMT-modified phenolic resin (TPF). This work presents a new, low-cost, and sustainable strategy to construct mechanically strong, tough, and flame-retardant tannin-based phenolic resins for various applications.

Eco-Friendly Adhesives Based on the Oligomeric Condensed Tannins-Rich Extract from Alder Bark for Particleboard and Plywood Production

Sarmite Janceva et al.

Summary: This research explored the possibility of using condensed tannins-rich extracts from grey alder and black alder bark in the production of environmentally friendly adhesives. The results showed that the CTs-PF resin had properties similar to commercial resin, with half the formaldehyde emission. CTs-PEI bonded particleboards met the requirements of the standard for particleboards in dry conditions, and CTs-PEI-ULEFR showed adhesive properties similar to ultra-low emitting formaldehyde resin.
