Comparison of sulfomethylated lignin from poplar and masson pine on cellulase adsorption and the enzymatic hydrolysis of wheat straw

Mohan Li et al.

Summary: The addition of sulfomethylated lignins in enzymatic hydrolysis significantly improved substrate digestibility and sugar yield. Competitive adsorption between cellulase, substrate lignin, and SLs was suggested as a mechanism for the observed effects.

Nanomechanics of Lignin-Cellulase Interactions in Aqueous Solutions

Peitao Zheng et al.

Summary: Efficient enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose in lignocellulose to glucose is crucial for biofuel production, but nonproductive lignin adsorption to cellulase impedes biorefinery development. Investigating the lignin-cellulase interaction, cation-pi interactions were identified and soy protein was shown to be an effective lignin-blocker, improving enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency through electrostatic, cation-pi, and hydrophobic interactions. These findings offer new insights into developing advanced biotechnologies to address nonproductive lignin adsorption, thus enhancing the economics of lignocellulosic biorefinery.

Integrated lignocellulosic biorefinery: Gateway for production of second generation ethanol and value added products

Amisha Patel et al.

Summary: The increasing demand for alternative renewable resources due to depleting petroleum sources has brought attention to lignocellulosic biomass as a potential source for second generation ethanol and value-added products. Efficient utilization of all three components of lignocellulosic biomass and the importance of pretreatment methods and biorefinery processes are key factors in the economic viability of cellulosic ethanol production. Biotechnology tools and process engineering play crucial roles in the development of integrated processes for biofuels, biochemicals, and biomaterials from lignocellulosic biomass.

Role of Tryptophan 38 in Loading Substrate Chain into the Active-site Tunnel of Cellobiohydrolase I from Trichoderma reesei

Akihiko Nakamura et al.

Summary: The Trp38 residue in TrCel7A plays a key role in processively loading the reducing-end of cellulose chain into the catalytic tunnel, while Trp40 is important for recruiting cellulose chain ends on the substrate surface. The mutation W38A disrupts the smooth gradient of binding energy and leads to increased activity towards amorphous cellulose but decreased activity towards crystalline cellulose.
