Preparation of chitosan/tannin and montmorillonite films as adsorbents for Methyl Orange dye removal

Nadia Tahari et al.

Summary: Chitosan/tannin/montmorillonite films are effective biosorbents for the removal of methyl orange from aqueous media. The films show high removal efficiency, large adsorption capacity, and follow pseudo second order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm models. Thermodynamic parameters suggest physical adsorption and exothermic behavior.

Formulation of Chitosan-Coated Apigenin Bilosomes: In Vitro Characterization, Antimicrobial and Cytotoxicity Assessment

Syed Sarim Imam et al.

Summary: In this study, apigenin-loaded bilosomes were prepared and their physical properties were evaluated. It was found that coating the bilosomes with chitosan significantly improved the vesicle size and encapsulation efficiency. Further research showed that the chitosan-coated bilosomes had enhanced permeation and mucoadhesion compared to the uncoated bilosomes. Transmission electron microscopy revealed smooth surfaces and non-aggregated vesicles in the chitosan-coated bilosomes. Additionally, the study found that APG-CHBLs exhibited better antimicrobial and anticancer cell effects.

Continuous hydrodistillation-ultrasonication flow batch-mode operation system to enhance essential oil extraction from Satureja khuzistanica and evaluation of in vitro anti-inflammatory activity

Asghar Hadi Darabad et al.

Summary: A continuous flow batch-mode operation system with ultrasound assistance was developed for the extraction of essential oil from Satureja khuzistanica Jamzad (SKJ). The ultrasound-assisted extraction achieved a higher yield compared to the conventional method. SEM analysis confirmed the improved extraction efficiency by creating rifts in plant cell structures. The extracted EO from SKJ demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory properties at a certain concentration.

Encapsulation strategies to enhance the antibacterial properties of essential oils in food system

Yulin Zhu et al.

Summary: The frequent occurrences of foodborne diseases and multidrug-resistant bacteria have led researchers to seek natural antiseptic alternatives like essential oils (EOs) to improve food safety. However, the effectiveness of EOs can be affected by various factors, and their application in the food industry is restricted by certain properties. Utilizing nanoparticles and packaging methods have shown to be effective in enhancing the protective and functional properties of EOs in different food systems.

A microfluidic chip for visual investigation of the interaction of nanoemulsion of Satureja Khuzistanica essential oil and a model gram-negative bacteria

Zinab Moradi Alvand et al.

Summary: Nanotechnology has provided innovative methods to combat foodborne and pathogenic bacteria. This study examined the effects of pure and nanoemulsified essential oil from Satureja Khuzistanica on Escherichia coli using a microfluidic chip. The results demonstrated that both the nanoemulsion and pure essential oil had a significant destructive impact on the bacterial membrane, leading to inhibition of bacterial activity.
