Mapping the physical literacy controversy: an analysis of key actors within scholarly literature

Lisa Young et al.

Summary: Physical Literacy (PL) is a concept enduring controversy, as multiple actors disagree on its definition and there is shared uncertainty around it. This paper maps the controversial state of PL as presented by different actors on the scholarly web, analyzing 77 scholarly articles to observe and describe the network of actors involved in the PL controversy. The findings reveal four clusters of actors invested in different ideologies of what PL should be, leading to overlapping yet contested framings of PL on the scholarly web. The implication is that PL flows in many directions and is understood/utilized differently across clusters of actors.

PLitPE: an intervention for physical literacy enriched pedagogy in Canadian elementary school physical education classes

Alexandra L. Stoddart et al.

Summary: This study provides empirical evidence supporting physical literacy enriched physical education. The intervention improved students' physical competence and the psychological domain (affective and cognitive), but did not result in improved behavior. Concerning sex differences, the intervention yielded an equal and substantive improvement in both males and females in the intervention group.

Moving from physical literacy to co-existing physical literacies: What is the problem?

Lisa Young et al.

Summary: This paper explores the different ideological positions associated with physical literacy (PL) and presents PL as a multiplicity of physical literacies. Through analyzing scholarly articles and non-scholarly texts, the study identifies three waves of PL cosmoses, each with its own objectives, actors, and obligations. The paper advocates for understanding PL as a multiverse, allowing individuals to become aware of and comprehend the distinct PL cosmoses and their differences for effective implementation.

How are physical literacy interventions conceptualized?-A systematic review on intervention design and content

Johannes Carl et al.

Summary: The concept of physical literacy emphasizes the importance of individuals valuing and engaging in physical activities for life through motivation/confidence, physical competence, and knowledge/understanding. Recent studies have transformed this concept into interventions, which primarily focus on children or adolescents and physical competence, while neglecting knowledge/understanding and motivation/confidence domains. Future interventions should aim to comprehensively address all aspects of physical literacy.

It also discovered that only a small percentage of tools address all three domains of physical literacy, with the International Physical Literacy Association's matrix being the only one that considers individuals of all age groups. Additionally, most tools were found to prioritize assessment for learning or a combination of assessment for learning and assessment as learning while evaluating individuals' progress in physical literacy.

SHAPE America and physical literacy: an event horizon?

Summary: This paper reflects on SHAPE America's K-12 National Standards and its connection to physical literacy, arguing that physical educators in the United States have primarily engaged with the term without exploring its theoretical depth. The paper concludes by calling for a revamping of standards that are not bound to a single concept or theoretical paradigm.
