Effectiveness of tinnitus therapy using a mobile application

Justyna Kutyba et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that using the ReSound Tinnitus Relief application can reduce the severity of tinnitus, particularly in terms of emotions. This mobile application may be an effective treatment for tinnitus patients and further research is recommended to assess its applicability in medical practice.

Chronic Tinnitus and the Positive Effects of Sound Treatment via a Smartphone App: Mixed-Design Study

Justyna Jolanta Kutyba et al.

Summary: The study aims to assess the effect of a mobile app that generates background sounds on the severity of tinnitus. Results showed that using the app led to a significant decrease in THI global score, with the largest improvements observed in emotional and catastrophic reactions subscales. A clinically important change in THI was reported by 39% of the study group.

A clinical trial of a patient-customized virtual reality intervention for tinnitus

Dong Heun Park et al.

Summary: Virtual reality (VR) shows potential as a clinical treatment for chronic subjective tinnitus. This study found that a VR-based tinnitus treatment program improved tinnitus symptoms, sleep quality, and quality of life for patients. Increased brain activity in certain frequency bands was also observed in patients who showed improvement in symptoms after the intervention.

Tinnitus treatment by vagus nerve stimulation: A systematic review

I Stegeman et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of vagus nerve stimulation on tinnitus distress and symptom severity in patients with chronic tinnitus. The majority of studies reported a small decrease in tinnitus distress or symptom severity with VNS treatment, but due to methodological limitations and low reporting quality, the exact effect of VNS on tinnitus remains unclear. A randomized controlled trial should be considered to draw definitive conclusions on the effectiveness of VNS in treating tinnitus.

Direct and Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Treatment of Tinnitus: A Scoping Review

Natalia Yakunina et al.

Summary: Recent animal research has shown that VNS paired with sound stimuli can eliminate tinnitus in noise-exposed rats, which led to clinical trials exploring the effectiveness of VNS for alleviating tinnitus in humans. Transcutaneous VNS has gained attention as a non-invasive alternative for tinnitus treatment, with studies also investigating its potential efficacy when used alone without sound stimuli.
