Single-Cell RNA-Seq Reveals a Crosstalk between Hyaluronan Receptor LYVE-1-Expressing Macrophages and Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells

Fabienne Burger et al.

Summary: This study found that res-like macrophages expressing LYVE-1 play a role in vascular calcification in atherosclerosis. These macrophages promote the transdifferentiation of VSMCs into osteogenic-like cells through the secretion of CCL24. The abundance of LYVE-1(+)CCL24(+) macrophages and elevated systemic levels of CCL24 are associated with vascular calcification and CAD events.

Atherosclerosis: Recent developments

Johan L. M. Bjoerkegren et al.

Summary: This article reviews the current understanding of the molecular, cellular, genetic, and environmental contributions to atherosclerosis and highlights recent developments and unexpected biological findings, such as the heterogeneity of inflammatory and smooth muscle cells in lesions, the roles of senescence and clonal hematopoiesis, and the links to the gut microbiome.

A common framework of monocyte-derived macrophage activation

David E. Sanin et al.

Summary: Macrophages display heterogeneity and different activation patterns in different organs and inflammatory conditions. By building a predictive model, we identified four conserved activation paths for macrophages. This integrative classification approach helps us understand and predict the activation patterns of macrophages in inflammation and homeostasis.
