The importance of gut-brain axis and use of probiotics as a treatment strategy for multiple sclerosis

Nitish Kumar et al.

Summary: It has been proven that the dysbiosis of gut microbiota has a significant impact on CNS illnesses such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, autism, and autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis (MS). The gut-brain axis serves as a communication pathway between gut microbes and the CNS. Disrupting the gut microbiome leads to secretion of cytokines and other immune cells, affecting the BBB and gut permeability. Recent animal model research has shown that gut microbiota greatly influences the pathophysiology of EAE/MS, leading to neuroinflammation and demyelination. Probiotics can be utilized to treat gastrointestinal dysbiosis, potentially serving as a preventive and treatment strategy for MS.

Efficacy, Safety, and Accuracy of Intra-articular Therapies for Hand Osteoarthritis: Current Evidence

Win Min Oo et al.

Summary: The lifetime risk of symptomatic hand osteoarthritis is 39.8%, with no disease-modifying drug available. Intra-articular therapy, such as corticosteroids and hyaluronic acid, is commonly used for symptomatic relief. Limited studies show short-term benefits of corticosteroids in interphalangeal OA, while corticosteroids and hyaluronic acid have similar outcomes in thumb-base OA. Investigational agents like insulin and botulinum toxin are also being studied, but with limited data due to small sample sizes and short-term follow-up.

Gut Microbiota and Bipolar Disorder: An Overview on a Novel Biomarker for Diagnosis and Treatment

Lorenza Lucidi et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis, growth, and digestive processes. It also influences the intercommunication system between the gut and the brain, potentially impacting the pathogenesis and clinical management of Bipolar Disorder. Current literature suggests a relationship between compositional alterations in the gut microbiota and BD, with potential benefits in treating BD symptoms through modifications in the microbiota composition. Further research is needed to explore the potential of correcting gut microbiota alterations as a novel strategy in BD management.

Alpha defensin-1 attenuates surgically induced osteoarthritis in association with promoting M1 to M2 macrophage polarization

J. W. Xie et al.

Summary: The study showed that a-defensin-1 promotes M1 to M2 macrophage polarization in vitro, has beneficial effects on chondrocytes indirectly through M2 macrophage polarization, and attenuates the severity of OA in vivo, suggesting it may be a potential treatment for OA.

Persister Escherichia coli Cells Have a Lower Intracellular pH than Susceptible Cells but Maintain Their pH in Response to Antibiotic Treatment

Olivia Goode et al.

Summary: Persisters have a lower intracellular pH compared to VBNC and susceptible cells even before exposure to antibiotics, which is linked to the activity of the enzyme tryptophanase. In the absence of tryptophanase, there is no difference in intracellular pH among persister, VBNC, and susceptible E. coli cells.Whole-genome transcriptomic analysis showed that the regulation of intracellular pH varies within a clonal population, with a subset of cells displaying differential pH regulation to perform specific functions, including survival after antibiotic treatment.
