Post-traumatic stress disorder and childhood emotional abuse are markers of subthreshold bipolarity and worse treatment outcome in major depressive disorder

Paolo Olgiati et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and childhood maltreatment with bipolar spectrum and their impact on antidepressant treatment outcome. The results showed that PTSD and childhood maltreatment were associated with more severe depression, impaired work and social functioning, comorbid anxiety disorders, and increased suicidality.

Obsessive-compulsive symptoms in major depressive disorder correlate with clinical severity and mixed features

Paolo Olgiati et al.

Summary: This study investigated obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) and their related clinical features in major depressive disorder (MDD). The findings showed that MDD patients with OCS had a greater severity of depression, more hypomanic symptoms, increased suicidal thoughts, a lower likelihood of achieving remission after antidepressant treatment, and more comorbid anxiety disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Childhood adversity and adulthood major depressive disorder

Summary: The study explores the association between specific types of childhood adversity and clinical features and treatment outcomes in adults with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). It shows that childhood adversities are linked to demographic characteristics, severity of depression and anxiety, treatment response, and long-term outcomes, emphasizing the importance of considering childhood maltreatment histories in treating individuals with MDD.

Suicidality in patients with primary diagnosis of panic disorder: A single-rate meta-analysis and systematic review

Yuan Zhang et al.

Summary: The lifetime suicide ideation and attempt rates among patients with panic disorder were higher than the general population but lower than patients with bipolar or depression. The suicide attempt rate was slightly higher in female patients compared to male patients. Comorbidity of panic disorder with other mental illnesses increased the lifetime suicide attempt rate by about 50%.

Predictors of suicidal ideation trajectories in the Sequenced Treatment Alternatives to Relieve Depression (STAR*D) study

Bartholt Bloomfield-Clagett et al.

Summary: This study identified different trajectories of suicidal ideation (SI) in patients with major depressive disorder and investigated the relationship between these trajectories and predictors such as anxiety and anhedonia. The findings suggest that anxiety and anhedonia are important factors in distinguishing SI trajectories and could be targeted for intervention or prognosis.

Persistence of suicidal ideation within acute phase treatment of major depressive disorder: analysis of clinical predictors

Paolo Olgiati et al.

Summary: This study explores the contribution of baseline clinical characteristics in nonremission of suicidal ideation (SI) in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). The presence of insomnia, reduced need for sleep, low self-confidence, lack of cheerfulness, and comorbid panic disorder were associated with the lack of SI remission. The combination of baseline SI and insomnia was moderately effective in predicting the lack of SI remission. Insomnia and bipolar features should prompt a search for more effective treatment solutions in MDD patients with SI to achieve remission and prevent suicidal behavior.

Worldwide suicide mortality trends (2000-2019): A joinpoint regression analysis

Milena Ilic et al.

Summary: Overall, global suicide mortality rates showed a decreasing trend, with the exception of the Americas where rates were on the rise. Countries like Barbados and Grenada exhibited the most significant reduction in mortality rates, while countries such as Lesotho and Cyprus experienced the highest increase in mortality rates among those with a rise. Further research is needed to investigate the reasons behind these trends and to recommend effective suicide prevention efforts in affected countries.

Characteristics and Predictors of Suicidal Ideation Severity among Callers to a Telephone Helpline in Spain

Javier Fernandez-Montalvo et al.

Summary: The study found that suicidal ideation can be identified among callers through telephone helplines, and rapid crisis interventions can be provided according to the risk of suicide. Callers with different levels of suicidal ideation showed significant differences in sociodemographics, risk factors, and suicidality variables.

The Role of Past Suicidal Behavior on Current Suicidality: A Retrospective Study in the Israeli Military

Leah Shelef et al.

Summary: The study examined past suicidal behavior of soldiers who recently attempted suicide and found no significant difference in the severity of the suicide attempts between those who attempted suicide before enlistment and during military service. Most first-time suicide attempts during military service used violent methods. Current thoughts and behavior, rather than past suicidality, were found to be the strongest predictor for the lethality of suicide attempts.

Summary: Depressive symptoms are strongly linked to suicidal ideation and behavior, serving as important risk factors for suicide. However, manic symptoms show no clear association with suicide risk, and mixed symptoms do not convey a greater risk of suicidal ideation or behavior than depressive symptoms alone.

Prevalence, course, and determinants of suicide ideation and attempts in patients with a depressive and/or anxiety disorder: A review of NESDA findings

Jasper X. M. Wiebenga et al.

Summary: The study highlights the high prevalence of suicide ideation and attempt among individuals with depressive and anxiety disorders, especially those with comorbid conditions. Various determinants such as clinical severity, sleep dysfunctions, aggression, hopelessness, and childhood trauma were found to be associated with suicide ideation and attempt, along with neurobiological factors like immune dysregulation and abnormal brain activity. More research is needed to further explore the multifactorial nature of suicide ideation and attempt, and to improve detection and intervention strategies.
