Educational Outcomes of Childhood Survivors of Critical Illness-A Population-Based Linkage Study*

Wojtek Tomaszewski et al.

Summary: This population-based study found that approximately 14.03% of children who survived pediatric intensive care did not meet the National Minimum Standard in their third year of primary school. Socioeconomic status, underlying diseases, and severity of illness upon admission were identified as independent factors associated with a higher risk of not meeting educational standards. The study highlights the importance of individual follow-up and support for children at risk.

Association of Acute Respiratory Failure in Early Childhood With Long-term Neurocognitive Outcomes

R. Scott Watson et al.

Summary: This study compared the neurocognitive outcomes of children who survived pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) hospitalization for acute respiratory failure with their biological siblings. The results showed that children who survived PICU hospitalization had significantly lower IQ scores, as well as lower scores in nonverbal memory, visuospatial skills, and fine motor control compared to their siblings. However, the magnitude of the difference was small and of uncertain clinical importance.

Lactate, Base Excess, and the Pediatric Index of Mortality: Exploratory Study of an International, Multicenter Dataset

Summary: This study found that blood lactate levels at ICU admission are more strongly associated with ICU mortality than base excess levels. Incorporating blood lactate into the Pediatric Index of Mortality model may lead to a small improvement in performance.

Midazolam exposure in the paediatric intensive care unit predicts acute post-traumatic stress symptoms in children

Debbie Long et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the medical treatment factors associated with post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in children after discharge from the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU). The results showed that one quarter of the children exhibited clinically elevated PTSS during the 12 months after PICU discharge. Midazolam therapy was significantly and independently associated with PTSS, particularly at 1 month after discharge.

Effect of Nitric Oxide via Cardiopulmonary Bypass on Ventilator-Free Days in Young Children Undergoing Congenital Heart Disease Surgery The NITRIC Randomized Clinical Trial

Luregn J. Schlapbach et al.

Summary: The administration of nitric oxide into the gas flow of the cardiopulmonary bypass oxygenator does not significantly reduce ventilator-free days in children undergoing heart surgery. These findings suggest that the use of nitric oxide delivered into the cardiopulmonary bypass oxygenator may not be beneficial in improving respiratory recovery in these patients.

Optimizing an existing prediction model for quality of life one-year post-intensive care unit: An exploratory analysis

Manon de Jonge et al.

Summary: This study aimed to improve the existing linear regression prediction model for long-term quality of life (QoL) of intensive care unit (ICU) survivors by incorporating additional ICU data. The results showed that the incorporation of additional data did not improve the predictive performance of the original model, and the best performing machine learning model used seven features. Pre-ICU QoL, the presence of a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) upon admission, and the highest temperature during the ICU stay were the most important predictors.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a prediction model for ICU survivors' change in quality of life one year after admission, finding that EQ-5D models had better predictive performance than SF-36 models, with 5 predictors in the best model explaining 58.0% of the variance.

Moving from bytes to bedside: a systematic review on the use of artificial intelligence in the intensive care unit

Davy van de Sande et al.

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the application of artificial intelligence in ICU, including aspects such as study design, dataset size, validation level, and clinical trial outcomes. The majority of ICU-AI models are still in the testing and prototyping environment, with only a few being evaluated in clinical practice. A uniform and structured approach is needed to support the development and implementation of AI in ICU for determining clinical benefit.

Summary: This study found that overall health is considered a key outcome by families after pediatric critical illness. Various methods were used to evaluate overall health outcomes for children and their families, with traumatic brain injury being the most commonly studied population.
