Evaluation on production trend, compositions, and impact of plastic waste in Chengdu, southwestern China

Xue Zhao et al.

Summary: This study used a BP neural network model to predict plastic waste production in Chengdu based on statistical data from 2005 to 2019. It also analyzed the composition and environmental impacts of the waste. The results showed that economic development, urban construction level, and residents' consumption were positively correlated to plastic waste production. High density polyethylene and polypropylene were the main components of plastic waste in Chengdu. The study highlighted the environmental impacts of plastic waste incineration and landfill. It emphasized the importance of implementing positive policies and measures for plastic waste management in the future.

Bisphenol A cleanup over MIL-100(Fe)/CoS composites: Pivotal role of Fe-S bond in regenerating Fe2+ ions for boosted degradation performance

Lin Wu et al.

Summary: A series of MIL-100(Fe)/CoS composites (MxCy) were fabricated using a ball-milling method, with the optimum M50C50 showing significantly higher Fenton-like catalytic activity towards bisphenol A (BPA) compared to the pristine MIL-100(Fe) and CoS. The improvement in BPA degradation was attributed to the synergistic effect between MIL-100(Fe) and CoS, with Fe-S bonds formed at the interface facilitating the Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle and improving electron mobility.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of two different synthesized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for the adsorption of Bisphenol A (BPA) from the aquatic system. It was found that MIL-53 had a higher adsorption efficacy compared to MOF (Ni), and three-parameter isotherm models provided a better description for BPA equilibrium data. The adsorption mechanism was supported by monolayer BPA adsorption theory, showing promising results for the adsorption of BPA using MIL-53.

Possible overestimation of bisphenol analogues in municipal wastewater analyzed with GC-MS

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that sulfated BPA can be analyzed directly as BPA using GC-MS without the need for a deconjugation step after derivatization. Co-elution of BPA and sulfated BPA during sample extraction may lead to overestimation of BPA in wastewater samples. Further investigation is needed to address potential overestimation of other micropollutants in municipal wastewater containing sulfated micropollutants.

Bisphenol-C is the strongest bifunctional ERα-agonist and ERβ-antagonist due to magnified halogen bonding

Xiaohui Liu et al.

Summary: The study reports the dual action of bisphenol compounds on ER alpha and ER beta receptors, with the bisphenol E analogs exhibiting enhanced agonist/antagonist activities due to an electrostatic halogen bond. Bisphenol C (BPC) is found to be a bifunctional ER alpha-agonist and ER beta-antagonist, with high ER alpha activity and inhibitory activity against ER beta. The intensified receptor interaction of BPC is attributed to the presence of an n-pi-pi-n conjugation system mediated through the >C = CCl2 double bond.
