Constructing C2H2 anchoring traps within MOF interpenetration nets as C2H2/CO2 and C2H2/C2H4 bifunctional separator

Chuanhai Jiang et al.

Summary: A new C2H2 adsorption trap (UPC-80) constructed by 4-fold interpenetration nets is reported, which shows high adsorption selectivities of 6.34 and 4.78 for C2H2/CO2 and C2H2/C2H4, respectively. Laboratory-scale fixed-bed breakthrough experiments confirm the efficient separation ability of UPC-80 towards the C2H2/CO2 and C2H2/C2H4 gas mixtures, with negligible capacity loss. Theoretical simulations attribute the good separation performance to the anchoring of C2H2 by two Tb2(COO)6 clusters in adjacent interpenetration nets and the strong electrostatic interaction.

Covert MOF-Based Photoluminescent Tags via Tunable Linker Energetics

Jacob Deneff et al.

Summary: Optical anticounterfeiting tags utilize the photoluminescent properties of materials to encode unique patterns for identification and validation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on polynuclear rare earth clusters are ideal materials for this purpose due to their fine control over structure and composition. In this study, we designed and synthesized heterometallic MOFs using Eu, Nd, and Yb with a specific linker. The resulting optical tags have multiple covert elements, with invisible emissions from Eu and infrared emissions from Nd and Yb. We also discovered a previously unobserved 11-metal cluster correlated with the presence of Yb in the MOFs. These materials demonstrate great potential as intricate optical tags and highlight the importance of linker selection in controlling their photoluminescent properties.

Tunable rare-earth metal-organic frameworks for ultra-high selenite capture

Bingbing Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of rare-earth metal-organic frameworks (RE-MOFs) were designed and synthesized to investigate the effects of ligands, clusters, and configurations on the structural stability and adsorption performance. The results showed that UPC183 exhibited better stability than the UPC-181/182 series, and UPC-183-Eu showed an ultra-high adsorption capacity for selenite, one of the highest reported for MOFs. The accurate analysis of the adsorption site using single-crystal structure and theoretical simulation further supported the excellent performance of UPC-183-Eu as a porous adsorbent for pollutant removal.

Dramatic Enhancement of Rare-Earth Metal-Organic Framework Stability Via Metal Cluster Fluorination

Matthew S. Christian et al.

Summary: Rare-earth polynuclear metal-organic frameworks (RE-MOFs) have high durability for caustic acid gas adsorption and separation based on gas adsorption to the metal clusters. Recent studies suggest that fluorination of the metal clusters can significantly stabilize the RE-MOFs without changing their acid-gas adsorption properties.
