Halogen Bonding in Perovskite Solar Cells: A New Tool for Improving Solar Energy Conversion

Pierangelo Metrangolo et al.

Summary: Hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskites have emerged as promising materials for next-generation solar cells due to their easy and low-cost production and unique optoelectronic properties. However, their practical implementation is hindered by their poor stability in air and moisture. Optimizing the chemical composition and exploiting non-covalent interactions can enhance the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells.

So Close, Yet so Different: How One Donor Atom Changes Significantly the Photophysical Properties of Mononuclear Cu(I) Complexes

Aleksandra Paderina et al.

Summary: The manipulation of photophysical properties of molecular emitters can be achieved by modifying the close environment of the metal center with a heavier pnictogen atom effect. Replacing a nitrogen atom with a heavier phosphorus atom in isostructural molecular systems results in significant changes in photophysical parameters. Novel Cu(I) complexes based on phosphine and diimine ligands were synthesized, and their peculiar photophysical properties, dependent on the heavier pnictogen atom effect, were investigated.

Stacking Interactions: A Supramolecular Approach to Upgrade Weak Halogen Bond Donors

Sergey Baykov et al.

Summary: The co-crystallization of tetracyanobenzene with haloarenes was studied, and it was found that the stacking interactions and lone pair-pi-hole bonds between the molecules promote the strength of halogen bonding. The stacking interactions increase the ability of haloarenes to act as halogen bonding donors.

Zwitterionic iodonium species afford halogen bond-based porous organic frameworks

Natalia S. Soldatova et al.

Summary: This article reports on a porous structure characterized by parallel channels arranged in honeycomb or rectangular patterns, with disordered water molecules filling the channels and the ability for reversible removal through heating. These porous systems represent the first reported cases of one-component 3D organic frameworks driven by halogen bonds, demonstrating the capability of zwitterionic aryliodonium tectons in affording robust frameworks.

Bifurcated Halogen Bonding Involving Diaryliodonium Cations as Iodine(III)-Based Double-σ-Hole Donors

Irina S. Aliyarova et al.

Summary: Three diaryliodonium tetrachloroaurates(III) were synthesized and their crystal structures revealed both three-center bifurcated halogen bonds and conventional two-center halogen bonds. Density functional theory calculations showed that the nature of these interactions is purely noncovalent, with the energies of bifurcated halogen bonds generally higher than those of two-center halogen bonds.

Unusual Effect of Impurities on the Spectral Characterization of 1,2,3-Triazoles Synthesized by the Cu-Catalyzed Azide-Alkyne Click Reaction

Artem N. Fakhrutdinov et al.

Summary: The analysis of products synthesized by Cu-catalyzed click reactions may be complicated by the presence of metal impurities, causing distortions and selectively removing signals in NMR spectra. Full undistorted spectra can be obtained through additional product treatment, more thorough purification, or recording at low temperatures. Impurities of paramagnetic metal ions in small amounts have been shown to lead to this effect, which may affect the interpretation of the chemical structure in NMR analysis.

Electron belt-to-σ-hole switch of noncovalently bound iodine(I) atoms in dithiocarbamate metal complexes

Lev E. Zelenkov et al.

Summary: Co-crystallization of dithiocarbamate complexes [M-II(S2CNEt2)(2)] (M = Cu 1, Ni 2, Pd 3, Pt 4) with 1,3,5-triiodotrifluorobenzene (FIB) forms an isomorphic series of co-crystals showing quadruple Cu/Ni/Pd/Pt isostructural exchange. The negative electrostatic potentials of Cu, Ni, Pd, and Pt decrease in the order Cu-II (-8.8) > Ni-II (-24.5) > Pd-II (-28.6) > Pt-II (-33.3 kcal mol(-1)), with Cu showing a shift from semicoordination to halogen bonding due to electron belt-to-s-hole switch. Semicoordinative contact Cu•••I is established by LP(I)-> LP*(Cu) charge transfer analysis. The more nucleophilic Pd and Pt centers exhibit unconventional metal-involving halogen bonding contacts with FIB, with the strongest interactions observed between Pt and the iodine(I)-based donors.
