High-temperature negative thermal quenching phosphors from molecular-based materials

Huixian Miao et al.

Summary: In this study, the high-temperature negative thermal quenching (NTQ) effect was observed in copper iodide cluster-based coordination polymers that emit deep-red to near-infrared (NIR) light. The NTQ operating temperature of these unconventional phosphors can reach as high as 500 K, which is the highest temperature achieved by NTQ molecular-based materials.

A Copper Iodide Cluster-Based Coordination Polymer as an Unconventional Zero-Thermal-Quenching Phosphor

Huixian Miao et al.

Summary: Phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-wLEDs) are promising for next-generation solid-state lighting and display technologies. However, most conventional phosphors suffer from thermal quenching at high temperatures. In this study, an unconventional high-efficiency metal-halide cluster-based phosphor with dynamic Cu-Cu interactions is investigated, showing resistance to thermal quenching. The weakened Cu-Cu interaction in such a phosphor enables sustained photoluminescence efficiency at high temperatures. The pc-wLEDs incorporating this zero-thermal quenching phosphor exhibit rapid brightness rise and high color rendering index.

Negative/Zero Thermal Quenching of Luminescence via Electronic Structural Transition in Copper-Iodide Cluster-Based Coordination Networks

Summary: The study examined the temperature dependence of thermally activated delayed fluorescence in copper(I)-organic coordination polymers and highlighted the importance of the ligand's electronic structure in optimizing the photophysical properties of coordination polymer emitters. The research may inspire new efforts to design luminescent materials exhibiting negative thermal quenching and/or zero thermal quenching effects at higher temperatures.
