Visible light-driven borylation of aryl halides by a B12 derivative based on a dual photoredox strategy

Kaito Sasaki et al.

Summary: Reductive dehalogenation of aryl halides followed by coupling with bis(pinacolato)diboron under anaerobic conditions was reported. The highest turnover numbers were achieved by using a B12 complex and an iridium photosensitizer. Mechanistic studies showed that dual excitation of the photosensitizer and the B12 complex were involved in the catalytic reaction, leading to the formation of arylboronate products.

C-C Bond Forming Reactions Enabled byVitamin B12Opportunities and Challenges

Tomasz Wdowik et al.

Summary: Cobalt is not only an essential micronutrient for mammals, but also plays an important role in organic synthesis, especially in catalysis. Vitamin B12, as a form of cobalt, has attracted attention for its unique reactivity and potential as a sustainable and environmentally friendly catalyst. The application of vitamin B12 in radical reactions is particularly important for the greener synthesis of important molecules.

Mechanistic Study for the Reaction of B12 Complexes with m-Chloroperbenzoic Acid in Catalytic Alkane Oxidations

Jiamin Cheng et al.

Summary: The oxidation of alkanes with m-chloroperbenzoic acid (mCPBA) catalyzed by the B12 derivative, heptamethyl cobyrinate, was studied under various conditions. The reaction rate shows a first-order dependence on the catalyst and mCPBA concentrations, but is independent of the alkane concentration. The kinetic deuterium isotope effect suggests that substrate hydrogen atom abstraction is not the rate-determining step. The formation of a cobalt(III)acylperoxido complex and its role in the oxidation reaction were investigated through experimental and theoretical studies.

Syntheses and Properties of Metalated Tetradehydrocorrins

Rui Sun et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis and characterization of a new type of metal complex using crystallographic, electrochemical, computational, and spectroscopic techniques. It was found that the metal complex can undergo reduction and catalyze macrocycle hydrogenation under cathodic electrolysis. Additionally, the complex was found to have long-lived excited states.

One-Pot Synthesis of Tertiary Amides from Organic Trichlorides through Oxygen Atom Incorporation from Air by Convergent Paired Electrolysis

Zhongli Luo et al.

Summary: A convergent paired electrolysis catalyzed by a B12 complex has been developed for the one-pot synthesis of tertiary amides from organic trichlorides. Various readily available organic trichlorides can be converted to amides in the presence of tertiary amines through oxygen incorporation from air at room temperature. The amide formation mechanism in the paired electrolysis, mediated by a cobalt complex, was proposed.

Summary: B12 complex shows excellent catalytic performance in electroorganic synthesis, efficiently removing organic chlorides, producing dechlorinated or oxidized products through electrolysis, catalyzing amide formation, and even enabling unique paired electrolysis. It also catalyzes the reduction of alkenes and alkynes.

Cobalt Catalyst Determines Regioselectivity in Ring Opening of Epoxides with Aryl Halides

Aleksandra Potrzasaj et al.

Summary: This study presents a method for the selective synthesis of linear products from epoxides using a vitamin B-12/Ni dual-catalytic system. This method complements approaches that provide branched alcohols and relies on blue-light irradiation for the reaction to occur. Both experimental and theoretical studies support the proposed mechanism involving alkylcobalamin as an intermediate in this process.
