Ligand-Field Effects in a Ruthenium(II) Polypyridyl Complex Probed by Femtosecond X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Yujin Kim et al.

Summary: This study employs femtosecond X-ray absorption spectroscopy to investigate the time evolution of spin and charge density in [Ru(m-bpy)(3)](2+) upon metal-to-ligand charge transfer excitation. The results reveal a short MLCT lifetime and a longer lifetime of (MC)-M-3 state, along with the influence of ligand methylation on the stabilization of these states. The study also highlights the potential of femtosecond L-edge spectroscopy as a probe of valence charge density and spin-state in 4d transition metals.

Ruthenium-catalyzed C-H bond functionalization in cascade and one-pot transformations

Rafael Gramage-Doria et al.

Summary: Ruthenium complexes are widely recognized as excellent pre-catalysts for challenging C-H bond functionalization reactions, and their combination with other types of chemical reactions can reduce purification and isolation steps, increasing reaction sustainability. Research in this field focuses on the compatibility of different reaction sequences, with a particular emphasis on the compatibility of ruthenium-catalyzed C-H bond functionalization with organic transformations, metal-mediated reactions, and transition metal catalysis.

Nonmagnetic J=0 State and Spin-Orbit Excitations in K2RuCl6

H. Takahashi et al.

Summary: In this study, using Ru L-3-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, the authors reveal archetypal J multiplets with a J = 0 ground state in the cubic compound K2RuCl6, which are well described within the LS-coupling scheme. This underscores the critical role of unquenched orbital moments in 4d-electron compounds and suggests further investigations into quantum criticality and excitonic magnetism on various crystal lattices.

Reduction Mechanisms of Anticancer Osmium(VI) Complexes Revealed by Atomic Telemetry and Theoretical Calculations

Gilles Berger et al.

Summary: RXES has been developed as a powerful tool to study chemical reactions and probe the chemical state of metal centers. In this study, RXES was used to monitor spectral changes associated with the reduction of osmium(VI) nitrido complexes to osmium(III) ammine state by glutathione, supporting the overall pathway for the reduction of high-valent anticancer metal complexes.

Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering Calculations of Transition Metal Complexes Within a Simplified Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Framework

Daniel R. Nascimento et al.

Summary: The method utilizes TDDFT theory to calculate the light-matter couplings between different excited state manifolds in 4d transition metal systems, for solving RIXS and other two-photon spectroscopy problems. By avoiding the need to solve expensive TDDFT quadratic-response equations, the method can capture experimental features and enable the assignment of experimental peaks.

Revealing the bonding of solvated Ru complexes with valence-to-core resonant inelastic X-ray scattering

Elisa Biasin et al.

Summary: By leveraging recent advances in high-energy-resolution tender X-ray spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, novel insights into the chemical bonding of a series of Ru(ii)- and Ru(iii)-complexes are revealed. The experimental Ru 2p4d resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) and theoretical calculations accurately assign spectral features and quantify metal-ligand bonding interactions. This combined experimental and theoretical approach reliably characterizes the ground and excited valence states of Ru complexes, serving as a basis for future investigations in biological and chemical applications of ruthenium or other 4d metals.
