Synthesis and Electrochemistry of Free-Base Porphyrins Bearing Trifluoromethyl meso-Substituents

Shaymaa Al Shehimy et al.

Summary: CF3-substituted porphyrins have attracted increasing interest. This study reports the synthesis of a series of free base porphyrins incorporating one, two, and three CF3 substituents, including a never-before-described 5,10,15-tris(CF3) substituted porphyrin. Detailed electrochemical and spectroscopic analyses were carried out to assess the electron-withdrawing properties of CF3 substituents compared to C6F5. The study proposes an interpretation of the unusual electrochemical signature of these molecules featuring three successive one-electron reduction waves.

Synthesis, structural characterization and binding ability of A2B cobalt(III) corroles with pyridine

Jyoti et al.

Summary: A series of cobalt complexes with A2B type bis-pyridine ligands have been synthesized and characterized, where different electron withdrawing or donating substituents at the meso position have been studied for their effects on the properties of the complexes. The behavior of mono- and bis-pyridine ligation was investigated through UV-Visible spectroscopy, showing that the lower the electron density on the corrole macrocycle, the higher the tendency for axial ligand binding.

Ligand Non-innocence and Single Molecular Spintronic Properties of AgII Dibenzocorrole Radical on Ag(111)

Jialiang Xu et al.

Summary: A facile method for the quantitative preparation of silver dibenzo-fused corrole Ag-1 is described in this study. It was found that the molecule adopts an unprecedented domed geometry on an Ag(111) surface, with sharp Kondo resonances observed at relatively high Kondo temperature, providing evidence for a non-innocent Ag-II-corrole(.2-) species. Further investigation showed that benzene ring fusion and molecule-substrate interactions play pivotal roles in enhancing orbital interactions, thereby stabilizing the open-shell singlet Ag-II-corrole(.2-) on Ag(111) surface. This strategy used for constructing metal-free benzene-ring fused corrole ligand gives rise to inspiration of designing novel metal-corrole compound for multichannel molecular spintronics devices.

Here's looking at the reduction of noninnocent copper corroles via anion induced electron transfer

W. Ryan Osterloh et al.

Summary: This study reports the synthesis, electrochemical and spectroscopic characterization of copper triarylcor-roles with varying numbers of nuno-nitroaryl substituents. The ability of these derivatives to be chemically reduced via anion induced electron transfer (AIET) using cyanide or fluoride anions was explored. UV-visible spectra of the reduced corroles and species generated after the addition of CN- or F- were identical, confirming the occurrence of AIET event in these systems and suggesting the presence of noninnocence.

Summary: The study compared the degree of ligand noninnocence in metallocorroles using hybrid density functional theory (B3LYP) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) theory. Detailed excited-state energetics data on the compounds were obtained, revealing periodic trends involving transition elements. DMRG-CASPT2 calculations provided validation for qualitative purposes but highlighted the possibility of large errors in interstate energy differences.
