Tunable ultrafast near-infrared nonlinear optical properties of Eu3+and silver nanoparticles doped alkali borate glasses

N. Chowdareddy et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the controllable third-order nonlinear optical properties of borate-based glass samples doped with metal nanoparticles and rare earth ions through an annealing process. The sensitive Z-scan method was used to analyze the nonlinear optical absorption and refraction. The results show that the enhancement in the nonlinear optical coefficients is attributed to the local field enriched by metallic silver nanoparticles near the rare earth ions. The NLO coefficients improve with longer heat treatment duration, but the nonlinear absorption coefficient decreases. The borate-based glass samples annealed for 40 hours at 450 degrees Celsius with rare earth ions and metallic silver nanoparticles are beneficial for optical communication and nonlinear photonic device applications.
