Emotional distress in young adults during the COVID-19 pandemic: evidence of risk and resilience from a longitudinal cohort study

Lilly Shanahan et al.

Summary: This study examines the emotional distress experienced by young adults during the COVID-19 pandemic, comparing it to their pre-pandemic distress levels. The study finds that pre-pandemic distress, as well as economic and psychosocial stressors during the pandemic, are strongly associated with emotional distress. COVID-19-related health risk exposures do not have a significant impact on emotional distress. Effective coping strategies include maintaining a daily routine, engaging in physical activity, and positive reappraisal or reframing.

COVID-19 increased censorship circumvention and access to sensitive topics in China

Keng-Chi Chang et al.

Summary: Crisis motivates people to seek more information, and in the case of the COVID-19 outbreak in China, individuals were able to bypass censorship to access international news and political content that were typically blocked. Comparisons to other countries affected by early outbreaks suggest that people who are normally blocked from accessing information may disproportionately access censored information during a crisis, leading to evaluations of the government based on both current events and censored history.

Determining containment policy impacts on public sentiment during the pandemic using social media data

Prakash Chandra Sukhwal et al.

Summary: Stringent containment and closure policies during COVID-19 have significant impacts on people's emotions and mental well-being. A study in Singapore found that the lockdown led to a slight increase in public sentiment, which further increased with the partial lifting of restrictions, but decreased after further easing of measures. Travel restrictions were associated with a decrease in sentiment, while introducing a facial covering policy at the start of the pandemic led to an increase in sentiment. The posts highlighted concerns about virus infection, wearing masks, salary, and jobs.

The superstar social media influencer: Exploiting linguistic style and emotional contagion over content?

Michael T. Lee et al.

Summary: In a rapidly growing market, social media influencers attract viewers through videos on their chosen interests and are rewarded monetarily based on views and subscribers. Research reveals that traditionally peripheral elements like linguistic style and emotional contagion may be more crucial for increasing viewership and subscribers, while content and production expertise, considered central elements in traditional persuasion research, play a lesser role in viewer and subscriber performance in relation to superstar social media influencers.

Does negatively toned language use on social media lead to attitude polarization?

Juergen Buder et al.

Summary: This study suggests that negativity in communication networks, whether in echo chambers or adversarial debates, plays a crucial role in attitude polarization. Negativity in users' own tweets was found to have the strongest association with polarization, while negativity among users' friends or consonance of sentiments between users and friends had less impact on polarization. These findings are linked to research on negativity bias, optimal distinctiveness theory, and intergroup contact theory.
