Improving Textual Emotion Recognition Based on Intra- and Inter-Class Variations

Hassan Alhuzali et al.

Summary: Textual Emotion Recognition (TER) is a crucial task in NLP with significant real-world applications. Previous research focused on maximizing the probability of correct emotion classification, but ignored intra- and inter-class variations. To address this, we propose a triplet center loss as an auxiliary task for emotion classification, enabling TER models to learn compact and discriminative features. Our method also evaluates the impact of intra- and inter-class variations on each emotion class. Experimental results on three datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach compared to previous methods, improving prediction scores and producing discriminative features.

Indirect Identification of Perinatal Psychosocial Risks From Natural Language

Kristen C. Allen et al.

Summary: During the perinatal period, psychosocial health risks are associated with serious adverse health outcomes. Stigma often prevents people from disclosing relevant information, hindering healthcare professionals from identifying those at risk. This research utilizes short diary entries to indirectly elicit information and examines patterns in the language of individuals at risk. The findings suggest that diary entries exhibit consistent themes and emotional perspectives, which can be used to predict screening measures for depression and psychological aggression by an intimate partner.

A Multitask Framework to Detect Depression, Sentiment and Multi-label Emotion from Suicide Notes

Soumitra Ghosh et al.

Summary: The significant rise in suicides is a major cause of concern in public health domain. Depression plays a major role in increasing suicide ideation among the individuals. Our research focuses on learning three closely related tasks, including depression detection, sentiment citation, and investigating their impact on analyzing the mental state of the victims. We propose a deep multitask framework that simultaneously models emotion recognition as the primary task, and depression detection and sentiment classification as the secondary tasks. Experiments show that our proposed multitask system achieves the highest cross-validation MR of 56.47%, indicating that integrating secondary tasks can improve the performance of the primary task.
