Enhancement of toluene hydrogenation activity of supported Pt nanoparticles with increasing the crystallinity of Pt

Kazumasa Murata et al.

Summary: The activity of Pt/Al2O3 in the hydrogenation of toluene increases with the increase of Pt particle size, but remains constant above a certain size. The crystalline phase of Al2O3 also affects the activity of Pt. Amorphous Pt nanoparticles are more active than Pt nanocrystals in the hydrogenation of toluene due to their abundance of Pt plane.

Solvent effects in integrated reaction-separation process of liquid-phase hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol over CuAl2O4 catalysts

Sutarat Thongratkaew et al.

Summary: In this study, the selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol over CuAl2O4 catalysts was investigated using solvents with varying chemical properties. It was found that branched alcohols resulted in higher furfuryl alcohol yields compared to linear alcohols. Furthermore, excellent furfuryl alcohol yields of 96% were achieved when the reactions were performed in nonane and decane solvents. In situ FTIR analysis revealed that the carbonyl group of furfural was preferentially adsorbed, leading to enhanced catalyst performance. The integration of this reaction separation concept allows for efficient production of furfuryl alcohol in immiscible solvents, minimizing downstream processes.

Preliminary feasibility study for hydrogen storage using several promising liquid organic hydrogen carriers: Technical, economic, and environmental perspectives

Manhee Byun et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive feasibility analysis of several promising liquid organic hydrogen carrier (LOHC) systems for hydrogenation processes. DBT-18H-DBT was found to have a significant amount of stored H-2 and the lowest storage cost. The effects of operating temperature, recycle ratio of unreacted H-2, and scale of H-2 storage on economic feasibility were investigated. In addition, carbon footprint analysis evaluated the unit CO2 emissions of each system.

Modification of HDT catalysts of FCC feedstock by adding silica to the kneading paste of alumina support: Advantages and disadvantages

T. S. Romanova et al.

Summary: The effect of Si incorporation at the stage of alumina preparation on the physico-chemical properties and catalytic performance of NiMo/Al2O3 catalysts for FCC feedstock pretreatment was studied. Silicon addition changed the texture characteristics of the support and reduced the acidity of alumina. Incorporation of Si facilitated the segregation of Ni from the NiMoS phase. Addition of Si through kneading improved the hydrodesulfurization activity of the catalysts in VGO hydrotreating.

Interaction between noble metals (Pt, Pd, Rh, Ir, Ag) and defect-enriched TiO2 and its application in toluene and propene catalytic oxidation

Yuqin Lu et al.

Summary: The particle size, electronic state, and metal-support interaction of supported noble metal catalysts significantly affect their VOC oxidation performance. Noble metals (Pt, Pd, Rh, Ir, and Ag) were loaded on TiO2 and their effects on toluene and propene combustion were investigated. The prepared catalysts were characterized and it was found that noble metal doping enhanced the electron transfer ability and oxygen mobility of the materials. Pd/TiO2 and Pt/TiO2 catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic performance through strong metal-support interaction. Activation of toluene, propene, and oxygen on suitable interfaces contributed to the performance of Pd and Pt catalysts.

Understanding the effects of solvents on the hydrogenation of toluene over supported Pd and Ru catalysts

Shiling Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that n-hexane had a small impact on the catalysts, while THF and methanol significantly inhibited the hydrogenation activity of toluene. In addition, IPA, despite strong adsorption on the catalysts, exhibited a hydrogen transfer effect that promoted the conversion of toluene.

Understanding the geometric and electronic factors of PtNi bimetallic surfaces for efficient and selective catalytic hydrogenation of biomass-derived oxygenates

Jingcheng Wu et al.

Summary: Ni-based catalysts show promise for the hydrogenation of furfural to high-value chemicals. By designing PtNi hollow nanoframes, the catalytic performance and electronic structure can be modulated, leading to high selectivity for the hydrogenation of furfural. The PtNi HNFs catalyst demonstrates excellent catalytic performance with 3D hierarchical structure and synergistic electronic effects, achieving high yields of furfuryl alcohol under mild conditions.
