Effect of activated carbon nanoparticles on the performance of PES nanofiltration membranes to separate kraft lignin from black liquor

Manorma Sharma et al.

Summary: In this study, polyethersulfone nanofiltration membranes were prepared using activated carbon nanoparticles (AC) and evaluated for separating lignin from black liquor (BL). The addition of AC improved membrane properties such as water permeability and surface hydrophilicity. 0.1% AC-based membranes showed the highest flux and lignin rejection for BL filtration, with excellent water permeability recovery after cleaning. Optimization tests revealed that the best performance was achieved at specific temperature, pressure, and pH conditions. This study establishes a new application for AC-based NF membranes in lignin separation with reduced fouling.

Granulated biomass fly ash coupled with fenton process for pulp and paper wastewater treatment

Joao Peres Ribeiro et al.

Summary: The study combines granulated biomass fly ash (GBFA) with the Fenton process to enhance the removal of adsorbable organic halides (AOX) from pulp bleaching wastewater. The optimal treatment setup involves sequential treatment by the Fenton process followed by GBFA, resulting in the highest AOX removal (60-70%), reduced COD, and enhanced wastewater biodegradability. GBFA can be recovered and reused without regeneration, yielding similar AOX removal compared with fresh GBFA. Furthermore, the operating cost of this treatment setup is lower than that of conducting the Fenton process alone.
