Silicone rubber matrix composites with shear thickening fluid microcapsules realizing intelligent adaptation to impact loadings

J. Q. Zhu et al.

Summary: This paper fabricates silicone rubber matrix composites with shear thickening fluid microcapsules (SR-STF) for advanced impact protective structure. The composites show flexibility at low strain rates but stiffness at high loading rates due to significant strain-rate sensitivity. A hyper-viscoelastic constitutive model is developed based on experimental results to predict the dynamic mechanical behavior of the SR-STF composites and provide practical application methods for STF in soft protective structures.
