Laser diffraction measurements of pigment size distributions of coatings and mill bases: implications of dilution medium and dispersion process parameters

Shicong Luo et al.

Summary: Coating properties, such as gloss, rheology, and exterior durability, are greatly influenced by the particle size distribution (PSD) of pigment agglomerates. This study developed an analysis procedure using laser diffraction to measure the PSD of coatings. Results showed that the measurements were affected by sample dilution, refractive index values, and the shape assumption of pigment agglomerates. However, with proper control of measurement conditions, laser diffraction proved to be a reliable technique for evaluating PSDs of coatings and predispersions.

Challenges and opportunities in modelling wet granulation in pharmaceutical industry-A critical review

Mehakpreet Singh et al.

Summary: Wet granulation is a crucial step in the manufacturing of solid-dosage forms in the pharmaceutical industry. Modelling wet granulation plays a vital role in shifting from batch mode to continuous production and implementing the Quality-by-Design approach. Three major models, including population balance model, discrete element method, and data-driven models, are evaluated in this review. Each approach has its advantages and can provide insights into different aspects of wet granulation. However, further research is needed to improve the accuracy and applicability of these models.

Floc Size Distributions of Cohesive Sediment in Homogeneous Isotropic Turbulence

Minglan Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flocculation dynamics of cohesive sediments in turbulent flows using an Eulerian-Lagrangian framework. It examines the dependence of the mathematical form of floc size distribution on sediment properties under different stickiness and stiffness conditions. The research reveals that at equilibrium, there is a dynamic balance between aggregation and breakup processes, leading to a statistically self-similar floc size distribution.

Population Balance Application in TiO2 Particle Deagglomeration Process Modeling

Radoslaw Krzosa et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that changing impeller geometry can improve the process of solid particle breakage. Numerical simulations using computational-fluid-dynamics methods were used to calculate flow field, hydrodynamic stresses, and other parameters. A mechanistic model of suspension flow was developed based on simulation results, showing good agreement with experimental data.
