Polymorph-Selective Role of Hydrogen Bonding and π-π Stacking in p-Aminobenzoic Acid Solutions

Raitis Bobrovs et al.

Summary: By combining solution NMR spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations, this study provides insights into the structural and dynamic features of p-aminobenzoic acid (pABA) in solution and its role in crystal nucleation. The interactions stabilizing pABA oligomers in different solvents are solvent-dependent, but both types of interactions contribute to a variety of self-associated species. MD simulations suggest that pABA oligomers are short-lived and display a fluxional character, indicating that the growth unit in pABA crystallization is likely a single molecule.

Use of additives to regulate solute aggregation and direct conformational polymorph nucleation of pimelic acid

Peng Shi et al.

Summary: Understanding the nucleation pathway and regulation is essential in producing desired crystals. Through the use of homologous additives, this study demonstrated a direct link between solute aggregation and conformational polymorph nucleation, showing that longer-chain additives have a stronger form II-inducing ability. The findings provide valuable insights into the manipulation of crystal formation through solute self-assembly interference.

Can molecular flexibility control crystallization? The case of para substituted benzoic acids

Sin Kim Tang et al.

Summary: This study systematically quantifies the impact of molecular flexibility on nucleation kinetics by comparing the nucleation rates of para substituted benzoic acids with flexible chain substituents. The importance of normalizing data to account for differing solubilities is highlighted, leading to more precise nucleation rate data. This research confirms the key role of intermolecular stacking interactions in determining relative nucleation rates and draws conclusions about conditions under which conformational change may become rate determining during a crystallization process.

Nucleation control and separation of vanillin polymorphs I and II through the swift cooling crystallization process

Supriya Sundareswaran et al.

Summary: In this study, the supersaturation dependent polymorphic nucleation behavior of vanillin in pure aqueous solution was investigated for the first time. It was found that different levels of supersaturation significantly affect the nucleation of stable and metastable polymorphs of vanillin.
