Noncoherent Massive Random Access for Inhomogeneous Networks: From Message Passing to Deep Learning

Jianhao Huang et al.

Summary: In this paper, a combined approach using message passing and deep learning is proposed to detect user activity and desired data in noncoherent mMTC. The algorithm based on generalized approximate message passing (GAMP) is compared with a model-driven deep learning method using deep neural networks (DNNs). The simulation results show that the GAMP-based algorithm outperforms the deep learning method when the channel distribution is known, but suffers from performance degradation when the channel distribution information is imperfect.

Compressed Random Access for Noncoherent Massive Machine-Type Communications With Energy Modulation

Jianhao Huang et al.

Summary: This work aims to jointly detect the user activity and the desired data for massive machine-type communications (mMTC) in the Internet of Things (IoT) by utilizing a noncoherent energy-based transmission scheme. The approximation message passing (AMP) algorithm is used to eliminate multi-user interference, and a denoiser is designed to minimize the mean-squared error (MSE) of the transmitted signals. The maximum a posteriori (MAP) criterion is adopted to approximately detect the user activity and the desired data.

Performance Analysis of Joint Active User Detection and Channel Estimation for Massive Connectivity

Jia-Cheng Jiang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new theoretical framework for analyzing the performance of joint active user detection and channel estimation. By adopting the replica method under the Bayes-optimal condition, the optimality and phase transition of the joint AUD and CE based on approximate message passing can be measured, and the corresponding performance metrics can be predicted. By analyzing two typical scenarios, the performance analysis in this paper provides novel results for various channel cases.

Unifying Message Passing Algorithms Under the Framework of Constrained Bethe Free Energy Minimization

Dan Zhang et al.

Summary: This article unifies variational message passing, belief propagation, and expectation propagation under an optimization framework of Bethe free energy minimization with differently imposed constraints, providing a theoretical framework for systematically deriving message passing variants. By reformulating constraints, a low-complexity EP variant is obtained for better estimation performance. Furthermore, a hybrid message passing algorithm is systematically derived for joint SSR and statistical model learning with near-optimal inference performance and scalable complexity.

Summary: This paper investigates a communication problem in which the receiver needs to detect the existence of an information packet and decode the message carried within it, presenting general nonasymptotic upper and lower bounds on the maximum coding rate depending on various factors. These bounds are expressed in terms of binary-hypothesis-testing performance metrics and generalize previously derived finite-blocklength bounds in a scenario involving a genie informing the receiver of the presence of a packet.
