Trick the body trick the mind: avatar representation affects the perception of available action possibilities in virtual reality

Tugce Joy et al.

Summary: In immersive Virtual Reality, manipulating the avatar can significantly impact interactive behavior. The presence of a handle can speed up the initiation of hand movement, but ongoing action planning may slow down action completion. Adaptation to the avatar can quickly alter affordance perception and affect action planning.

Evaluating Grasping Visualizations and Control Modes in a VR Game

Alex Adkins et al.

Summary: The study explores the best way to interact with virtual environments using hand tracking, showing that hand tracking can increase feelings of ownership, realism, enjoyment, and presence. In the virtual escape room experiment, visualizing tracked hands during grasps leads to higher ratings, demonstrating better results compared to using controllers.

A Comparative Study of Interaction Time and Usability of Using Controllers and Hand Tracking in Virtual Reality Training

Chaowanan Khundam et al.

Summary: This research explored the differences between using VR controllers and hand tracking in medical interactions, finding that in intubation training, using hand tracking is as effective as using controllers. Hand tracking is seen as a more natural and intuitive input method for VR medical training, allowing trainees to recognize and correct their postures more effectively.

Avatar Embodiment. A Standardized Questionnaire

Tabitha C. Peck et al.

Summary: This paper aims to enhance the understanding of embodiment by analytically determining its components, providing a universal questionnaire for measurement standardization, and motivating researchers to use a standardized questionnaire. The final questionnaire includes 16 questions and four interrelated sub-scales with high reliability. Results show that the updated questionnaire produced a wider range of scores, was able to detect the presence of a self-avatar, and revealed differences in embodiment scores based on participants' age.
