In vivo assessment of hypertensive nephrosclerosis using ultrasound localization microscopy

Lanyan Qiu et al.

Summary: This study validates the advantages of ultrasound localization microscopy (ULM) over conventional clinical inspections and ultrasound imaging methods for the early diagnosis of hypertensive nephrosclerosis (HN). The quantitative results demonstrate that ULM can effectively diagnose early stage HN by detecting the blood flow speed changes of interlobular arteries. ULM may promise a reliable technique for the early diagnosis of HN in the future.

Randomized Spatial Downsampling-Based Cauchy-RPCA Clutter Filtering for High-Resolution Ultrafast Ultrasound Microvasculature Imaging and Functional Imaging

Yihui Sui et al.

Summary: In this study, a Cauchy-norm-based robust principal component analysis method is proposed to enhance the extraction of small-vessels' blood flow in ultrasound imaging. This method utilizes sparsity penalization and involves a randomized spatial downsampling strategy and alternating direction method of multipliers to accelerate computation. The performance of the proposed method is compared with other classical methods in terms of clutter filtering, power Doppler, color Doppler, and functional ultrasound imaging using a rat brain dataset. The computational efficiency is also discussed.

Ultrafast Power Doppler Imaging Using Frame-Multiply-and-Sum-Based Nonlinear Compounding

Jinbum Kang et al.

Summary: UPDI-FMAS is a promising technique for microvascular imaging based on a nonlinear compounding framework, which improves contrast resolution by estimating signal coherence using autocorrelation function and emphasizing coherent blood flow signals through clutter filtering. The method shows improvements in signal-to-noise ratio and contrast-to-noise ratio compared to conventional UPDI-CC, especially with the increase in the number of plane waves, leading to enhanced image quality in in vivo studies.

Summary: A method combining coherent spatial compounding, SVD clutter filtering, and correlation processing is proposed to suppress background noise and incoherent artifacts in ultrasound vascular imaging, resulting in improved blood flow visualization. Evaluation in wire-target simulations and phantom showed SNR improvement, and consistent results were found in flow channel phantom testing against conventional power Doppler. The method was further demonstrated in human liver, breast tumor, and inflammatory bowel disease data sets, showing potential for more reliable small vessel imaging for various clinical applications.

Lijie Huang et al.

Summary: Spinal cord tumor (SCT) is a rare but highly disabling disease. Surgical resection is the main treatment, and ultrasound microvascular imaging (UMI) has been developed to map tumor-related microvasculature. This study successfully demonstrated the feasibility of UMI in intraoperative detection of human SCT by showing higher microvessel density (MD) and power Doppler density (PDD) in tumor regions compared to normal tissues.
