Junction-to-Case Thermal Resistance Measurement and Analysis of Press-Pack IGBTs Under Double-Side Cooling Condition

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: This article proposes an indirect method to measure the thermal resistance R-thjc of the press-pack IGBTs (PP IGBTs) under double-side cooling condition, and develops a simpler definition method for double-sided R-thjc. A thermomechanical bidirectional coupling finite element model is built to explain the impact mechanism. The equivalence of the two methods is discussed based on theoretical analysis and experiment.

Systematic Analysis and Characterization of Extreme Failure for IGCT in MMC-HVdc System-Part I: Device Structure, Explosion Characteristics, and Optimization

Wenpeng Zhou et al.

Summary: This research focuses on explosion proof of power devices in the MMC-HVdc system, with integrated gate commutated thyristor (IGCT) identified as the device with the simplest housing structure. Testing and analysis show that IGCT with evenly distributed destruction positions exhibits excellent explosion proof, while IGCT with edge focusing destruction positions performs poorly. By optimizing the design of IGCT, it is validated to have excellent explosion proof.

A Fully Coupled Model of Multi-Chip Press-Pack IGBT for Thermo-Mechanical Stress Distribution Prediction

Cao Zhan et al.

Summary: This article proposes a fully coupled multiphysical model for multichip press-pack insulated gate bipolar transistor (PPI) considering surface roughness. The model successfully couples the electrical, thermal, and mechanical domains through contact resistance, allowing for simultaneous prediction of temperature and stress. The influence of surface roughness on thermo-mechanical stress distribution is analyzed and validated through temperature measurement and observation of fretting scratches. Additionally, a strain-life fatigue model is established, showing the impact of surface roughness on the fatigue life of the chip metallization area.

Systematic Analysis and Characterization of Extreme Failure for IGCT in MMC-HVdc System-Part II: Failure Mechanism and Short Circuit Characteristics

Wenpeng Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the short circuit failure mode (SCFM) of integrated gate commutated thyristor (IGCT) in high voltage direct current power transmission. The short circuit mechanism is proposed based on experimental results, revealing that IGCT with turn-OFF failure exhibits a self-triggering effect, while IGCT with surge current failure distributes the short current among multiple initial destruction areas.

Wear-Out Mechanism of Press-Pack IGBTs Under Accelerated Aging Test

Cao Zhan et al.

Summary: This article investigates the wear-out mechanism of press-pack insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs) (PPIs) using both numerical and experimental methods. Three wear-out modes are observed: fretting scratches, cracks next to the additional metallization area, and oxidation of the additional metallization area. The fully coupled multiphysical model is utilized to analyze the temperature, pressure, and voltage distribution, and it is found that fretting wear is the main reason for the three wear-out modes.

Yiming Zhang et al.

Summary: In this article, a sequential V-ce(T) method with separated gate controller is proposed to measure the junction temperature distribution within press-pack insulated gate bipolar transistors (PP IGBTs). The method is integrated into a standard dc power cycling test to validate its applicability and effectiveness. The measured junction temperature exhibits a specific distribution pattern influenced primarily by the deformation of the copper plate.

Summary: This article develops a distributed-press-pack (DPP) packaging technology to achieve balanced thermal stress on chips. By decentralizing the pressing load and selecting the appropriate clamping method, mechanical stress distribution is improved, and power density is increased by integrating busbars and heatsinks. A DPP prototype is implemented and the effect of the proposed technology on thermal stress balance is verified.
