Electric bus planning & scheduling: A review of related problems and methodologies

Shyam S. G. Perumal et al.

Summary: The electrification of bus fleets in cities has environmental benefits, but electric buses face limitations in terms of range, charging times, and infrastructure requirements. This study reviews the problems in electric bus planning, including fleet investment, placement of charging infrastructure, vehicle scheduling, and charging scheduling. The review also identifies the need for research on scheduling robustness and rescheduling of electric vehicles, as well as integrated approaches to improve the efficiency of electric bus transport systems.

Pre-Normative Charging Technology Roadmap for Heavy-Duty Electric Vehicles in Europe

Mehrnaz Farzam Far et al.

Summary: This paper presents a pre-normative roadmap that predicts the developments in charging technologies for heavy-duty electric vehicles (HD-EVs). The findings suggest that roof-based pantographs and plug-based charging interfaces are currently the most popular options. Static and conductive charging technologies show more potential than dynamic and wireless options. Inductive charging may be a future solution for HD-EVs if the current bottlenecks can be addressed. Interoperability is identified as a major challenge for current charging technologies.

A joint optimisation model for charger locating and electric bus charging scheduling considering opportunity fast charging and uncertainties

Hao Hu et al.

Summary: This paper examines the problem of optimizing the deployment of fast chargers at bus stops and developing charging schedules for electric buses, considering time-varying electricity prices and penalty costs. The numerical results show the feasibility of deploying fast chargers at intermediate and last stops and the benefits of frequent charging activities during bus service trips. Electric buses outperform conventional diesel buses in terms of energy consumption costs.

Optimizing electric bus charging infrastructure considering power matching and seasonality

Xiaohan Liu et al.

Summary: This research introduces a novel optimization model for electric bus charging station location, charger configuration, charging time, and vehicle flow considering power matching and seasonality. A surrogate-based optimization approach is used to efficiently solve the mixed integer nonlinear program, revealing significant performance differences in vehicle scheduling and charging among different bus fleets in a Beijing-based transit system. Interesting findings on the distribution of vehicle flows for charging provide strong evidence to consider power matching in the bus charging infrastructure layout.
