Differences in the size at maturity of female American lobsters (Homarus americanus) from offshore Southern New England and eastern Georges Bank, USA

Aubrey A. Ellertson et al.

Summary: The reproductive dynamics of female lobsters in the offshore American lobster fishery are not well understood due to difficulties in biological sampling. This study determined the size at which female lobsters reach sexual maturity in two offshore areas and found that it varies between Southern New England and eastern Georges Bank. The study provides valuable information for stock assessment scientists and managers to better understand lobster population demographics in data-poor regions.

Enhancing fishery-dependent information in data-poor fisheries; integrating gear-in-gear-out sensors and mobile reporting technology in a mixed Irish Sea static-gear fishery

J. A. Emmerson et al.

Summary: This study examined the application of an enhanced electronic reporting system and gear-in-gear-out technology in a data-limited, mixed species, static gear fishery. The results showed that environmental variables and inter-specific interactions had a significant impact on fishing yields. These findings highlight the importance of understanding these interactions for the development of standardized assessment metrics.

A comparison of the size at maturity of female American lobsters (Homarus americanus) over three decades and across coastal areas of the Gulf of Maine using ovarian staging

Jesica D. Waller et al.

Summary: The size at maturity of female lobsters in the Gulf of Maine has decreased over the past 25 years due to a observed inverse relationship between temperature and maturity size. By using ovarian staging and growth measurements, researchers were able to accurately assess lobster stocks and their reproductive development.

Size-at-maturity shift in a male-only fishery: factors affecting molt-type outcomes in Newfoundland and Labrador snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio)

Darrell R. J. Mullowney et al.

Summary: In some portions of the Newfoundland and Labrador snow crab stock range, a sex-asymmetric downward shift in size-at-terminal molt has occurred in males. Factors such as cold water expanse and large male density play significant roles in promoting this shift in size-at-terminal molt. This shift is associated with the recent increase in fishery exploitation rates and the low density of large male snow crabs.
