Global distribution and diversity of alien Ponto-Caspian amphipods

Denis Copilas-Ciocianu et al.

Summary: The Ponto-Caspian region is a significant source of aquatic alien species in the Northern Hemisphere, particularly amphipod crustaceans. This study provides a comprehensive summary of the taxonomic and ecomorphological diversity of these alien species, as well as their distribution patterns based on global records. The findings reveal a gradual decrease in diversity with distance from the native region and highlight the influence of anthropogenic factors on the biogeographical patterns.

Tracking a killer shrimp: Dikerogammarus villosus invasion dynamics across Europe

Ismael Soto et al.

Summary: The killer shrimp Dikerogammarus villosus is an invasive alien amphipod that has spread across freshwater rivers and streams in Europe, causing ecological and economic impacts. Our study analyzed 96 European time series and identified trends in the population dynamics of D. villosus, as well as its impact on ecological communities. We found that D. villosus is well-established in European waters and its abundance significantly alters recipient community metrics. However, early detection methods are needed to address the cryptic initial introductions of D. villosus.

A substantial range expansion of alien Ponto-Caspian amphipods along the eastern Baltic Sea coast

Summary: We report a considerable range expansion of four Ponto-Caspian amphipod species in transitional waters along the southeastern Baltic Sea coast. Our findings reveal that Ponto-Caspian amphipods are much more widespread in the Baltic area than previously known and highlight the need for more stringent monitoring.

Taxonomic, ecological and morphological diversity of Ponto-Caspian gammaroidean amphipods: a review

Denis Copilas-Ciocianu et al.

Summary: The dynamic geological history of the Ponto-Caspian region has led to the evolution of a highly adaptable endemic fauna, particularly the amphipod crustaceans of the superfamily Gammaroidea. This group has a diverse range of species and plays an important role in adaptive radiation. The molecular phylogenies suggest that this radiation originated in the mid-Miocene period and is nested within a morphologically conserved clade. The Ponto-Caspian gammaroids exhibit extensive disparity in body characteristics and ecological preferences, making them a potentially powerful model for studying adaptive radiations and invasive species evolution.

Molecular markers and SEM imaging reveal pseudocryptic diversity within the Ponto-Caspian low-profile amphipod invader Dikerogammarus bispinosus

Summary: The study revealed the presence of three independent lineages of the Ponto-Caspian amphipod Dikerogammarus bispinosus, each with distinct molecular and morphological characteristics. It was found that D. bispinosus is a native species in the Caspian region, contrary to previous beliefs. The study highlights the importance of further research to fully understand the evolutionary history and taxonomy of this species complex.

Economic costs of invasive bivalves in freshwater ecosystems

Phillip J. Haubrock et al.

Summary: This study assesses the spatio-temporal and taxonomic patterns of costs associated with invasive freshwater bivalves and identifies knowledge gaps. The results reveal that the cumulative global costs of invasive macrofouling bivalves amounted to $63.7 billion between 1980 and 2020, with significant taxonomic and spatial biases, primarily concentrated in North America.

Individual small in-stream barriers contribute little to strong local population genetic structure five strictly aquatic macroinvertebrate taxa

Summary: The study revealed that despite the presence of numerous small in-stream barriers, most species can overcome these obstacles to prevent population fragmentation. However, populations of all species remain highly isolated within a few kilometers, indicating the existence of contemporary dispersal barriers.

Turcogammarus aralensis (Uljanin, 1875), a relict pontogammarid amphipod crustacean from the Aralo-Caspian paleobasin: redescription, phylogenetic position and biogeography

Denis Copilas-ciocianu et al.

Summary: The Ponto-Caspian region is home to the second most diverse lacustrine radiation of amphipod crustaceans in the world. One of the species in this region, Turcogammarus aralensis, has never been properly described, leading to frequent taxonomic reshuffling. This study provides a full re-description of T. aralensis, determines its phylogenetic position using molecular analysis, and confirms its species status.

A DNA barcode reference library for endemic Ponto-Caspian amphipods

Denis Copilas-Ciocianu et al.

Summary: The Ponto-Caspian region is a hotspot for endemic species, with the most diverse group being amphipods. This study used DNA barcoding to classify nearly 60% of known Ponto-Caspian amphipod species and compared the results with morphology-based taxonomy. The findings indicate that DNA barcoding is valuable for clarifying the diversity of Ponto-Caspian amphipods, but further work is needed to resolve taxonomic uncertainties.

The Ponto-Caspian and native amphipod life history in the Daugava River, Latvia

Jana Paidere et al.

Summary: This study described the life history of Gammarus varsoviensis, Pontogammarus robustoides, and Gammarus pulex in the Daugava River in Latvia, including their population structure, reproductive period, and fecundity. The results revealed that Varsoviensis and Robustoides had longer reproductive periods with multiple generations per year, while G. pulex had only one generation. All species had a high proportion of juveniles.

First records of the alien amphipod Dikerogammarus haemobaphes (Eichwald, 1841) in the Neman River basin (Belarus)

Tatsiana Lipinskaya et al.

Summary: The alien amphipod Dikerogammarus haemobaphes, well-established in the main rivers of the Belarusian part of the Black Sea basin, was recorded for the first time in the Belarusian part of the Neman River basin. It is likely that this species spread naturally or was introduced through boat hull fouling from the Polish part of the Narew River. The invasion of this species into the Neman River is expected to occur in the near future.

Drastic changes of the amphipod fauna in northern Germany and the displacement of Gammarus lacustris GO Sars, 1864 to relict habitats/status

Ulrich Messner et al.

Summary: The amphipod fauna of Central Europe has undergone a significant change over the last century, with a particularly dramatic increase in the past 30 years, especially in northeast Germany. Some species, such as Gammarus lacustris, have become relic species due to competition from other species. Exotic species introduced from the Pontocaspian region have further intensified this process.
