Prevalence and determinants of atrial fibrillation progression in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation

Bao-Oanh Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop a new atrial fibrillation (AF) progression risk prediction model in patients with paroxysmal AF (PAF) to determine the risk and treatment targets for AF progression. The study found that markers for atrial remodeling, sex, mitral valve regurgitation, waist circumference, and biomarkers associated with coagulation, inflammation, cardiomyocyte stretch, and atherosclerosis were all associated with AF progression.

Rate control drugs differ in the prevention of progression of atrial fibrillation

Tim Koldenhof et al.

Summary: The study suggests that verapamil may be more effective in reducing AF progression in patients with paroxysmal AF compared to beta blockers or no rate control.

Sleep-Disordered Breathing and Cardiac Arrhythmias in Adults: Mechanistic Insights and Clinical Implications: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association

Reena Mehra et al.

Summary: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is associated with cardiac arrhythmias and may trigger atrial and ventricular arrhythmic events. SDB treatment reduces atrial fibrillation recurrence, but high-level evidence supporting SDB intervention on rhythm control is lacking. Future scientific research should focus on optimizing SDB screening and predictive metrics, elucidating the influence of sex and background factors on SDB, and conducting rigorous and adequately powered clinical trials.

Mobile app-based symptom-rhythm correlation assessment in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation

Astrid N. L. Hermans et al.

Summary: This study used a mobile app-based approach to assess symptom-rhythm correlation (SRC) in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). It found that the SRC index was relatively low and that pulse rate was the main determinant of reported symptoms.

Implantable loop recorder detection of atrial fibrillation to prevent stroke ( The LOOP Study): a randomised controlled trial

Jesper H. Svendsen et al.

Summary: In individuals with stroke risk factors, ILR screening resulted in a three-times increase in atrial fibrillation detection and anticoagulation initiation but no significant reduction in the risk of stroke or systemic arterial embolism. These findings might imply that not all atrial fibrillation is worth screening for, and not all screen-detected atrial fibrillation merits anticoagulation.

Clinical utility of rhythm control by electrical cardioversion to assess the association between self-reported symptoms and rhythm status in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation

Astrid N. L. Hermans et al.

Summary: In a study involving 81 patients with persistent AF, only 22% showed a symptom-rhythm correlation, 35% did not show any correlation, and 43% had an unevaluable correlation. Individual patients were found to have variable symptom patterns at different time points, suggesting the need for better strategies to assess symptom-rhythm correlation in patients with persistent AF.
