Perinatal opioid exposure results in persistent hypo-connectivity of excitatory circuits and reduced activity correlations in mouse primary auditory cortex

Binghan Xue et al.

Summary: This study investigates the functional effects of perinatal fentanyl exposure on the auditory cortex. Results show that perinatal fentanyl exposure leads to decreased excitatory functional circuits and altered population activity in primary sensory areas in adult mice. These circuit changes may contribute to the observed language and cognitive deficits in infants exposed to opioids.

Age-related changes in neuronal receptive fields of primary auditory cortex in frequency, amplitude, and temporal domains

Robin Bishop et al.

Summary: Aging populations often experience age-related hearing loss, which is associated with decreases in hearing sensitivity and pathophysiological changes in the central auditory system. This study compared the receptive fields of young and old mice AI neurons in frequency, amplitude, and temporal domains. The results showed fundamental changes in the response properties of AI neurons in old mice, including lower frequency tuning, higher amplitude preference, broader frequency tuning, shorter dB range, longer response duration, and higher firing rate. The study suggests that age-related hearing loss has less impact on auditory information processing within optimal frequency and amplitude ranges.

Decreased Modulation of Population Correlations in Auditory Cortex Is Associated with Decreased Auditory Detection Performance in Old Mice

Kelson Shilling-Scrivo et al.

Summary: Age-related hearing loss, or presbycusis, is a common condition affecting one-third of the global population. This study investigates the role of the aging brain in presbycusis and demonstrates that old animals with preserved peripheral hearing exhibit increased prestimulus activity, reduced attentional gain, and increased noise correlations in the primary auditory cortex. These changes contribute to a decrease in the representation of target sounds among distracting stimuli.

Age- and movement-related modulation of cortical oscillations in a mouse model of presbycusis

J. A. Rumschlag et al.

Summary: Brain oscillations are associated with specific cognitive and sensory processes, and age-related hearing loss may alter cortical oscillations, leading to speech recognition impairments. Resting and evoked gamma oscillations may decline with presbycusis. Observing these changes in EEG may serve as biomarkers for presbycusis.

Age-related changes in event related potentials, steady state responses and temporal processing in the auditory cortex of mice with severe or mild hearing loss

Jeffrey A. Rumschlag et al.

Summary: This study compared cortical responses in two strains of mice with different degrees of age-related hearing loss under the same stimulus conditions. The results showed that severe hearing loss in old C57 mice led to increased ERP amplitudes but reduced temporal fidelity, while mild hearing loss in old FVB mice did not significantly affect ERP amplitudes but showed changes in temporal processing under more challenging sound conditions.

Altered Response Dynamics and Increased Population Correlation to Tonal Stimuli Embedded in Noise in Aging Auditory Cortex

Kelson Shilling-Scrivo et al.

Summary: Age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) affects one-third of the global population and is characterized by difficulty hearing in noisy environments. A study using a mouse model showed that aging mice exhibited larger responses to tones, reduced inhibition, lower sensitivity to temporal changes, increased pairwise activity correlations, reduced diversity in responses to sound stimuli, and a loss of information in neuronal populations in the aging brain. This indicates that aging not only impacts individual neuron responses but also how these neurons jointly represent stimuli.
