Transoral robotic surgery adoption and safety in treatment of oropharyngeal cancers

Jamie R. Oliver et al.

Summary: The study showed that the utilization of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) in oropharyngeal cancer patients has been increasing annually, with significant differences in positive margin rates between surgical centers. The rates of 30-day unplanned readmission and early postoperative mortality after TORS were low, and high-volume centers had better outcomes with lower positive margin rates and early postoperative mortality.

Summary: This study examined the treatment modalities for early-stage supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma and found that the surgical group had a higher rate of T upstaging, which may contribute to the lower overall survival in the radiotherapy group.

Surgical, Oncological, and Functional Outcomes of Transoral Robotic Supraglottic Laryngectomy

Stephane Hans et al.

Summary: Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) is an effective and safe treatment for supraglottic squamous cell carcinoma, with low postoperative complication rates, high survival rates, and quick return to oral diet. It can be a promising therapeutic approach for early- and intermediate-stages cancers.

Robotic surgery may improve overall survival for T1 and T2 tumors of the hypopharynx: An NCDB cohort study

Andrey Finegersh et al.

Summary: Hypopharyngeal cancer has poor survival rates, and robotic surgery is shown to significantly improve overall survival compared to laser surgery and primary radiation for T1 and T2 tumors. This improvement may be due to decreased positive margin rates with robotic surgery. As robotic platforms become more widely adopted, rates of hypopharyngeal robotic surgery are expected to increase, potentially further enhancing overall survival for this type of cancer.

Transoral robotic surgery versus nonrobotic resection of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma

Yeshwant Chillakuru et al.

Summary: The study found that in patients with oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma, those undergoing transoral robotic surgery (TORS) had better overall survival compared to those undergoing nonrobotic surgery (NRS). Specifically, TORS was associated with significantly improved survival rates in patients with base of tongue primaries.
